Hi
Could anyone advise which heat lamp is the best for a whelping box, do you buy online etc, and type of bulb you use, also how you assemble it over the whelping box - hanging from ceiling etc,Thanks for your help

I don't use a heat lamp anymore as I've seen too many smashed & also they have burnt bitches.

I use an oil filled radiator nowadays which is brilliant. It is on a thermostat too so it keeps the room temperature just perfect. I bought it from B&Q for about £50 a few years ago.

I have bought two online and 1 from a local pet shop.  no problems with either.  We put a hook in the ceiling and elevate on a chain, make sure the power cable is clipped up out of harms way too.

In domestic situations it is often far easier and better to use a heat pad.  I also use an Oil filled radiator to keep the room warm at night when Central Heating is off.

I use a "lamb lamp" bought in a farm supply shop.  I use the red bulbs in order to give heat without light so that I can reasonably expect a little sleep when I am camped in the kitchen.  Mine is fixed to a wooden jibbet that Hubby made me that slots in behind a handy radiator.  I prefer this arrangement because I can raise and lower the lamp on its hanging chain to quickly change temperature according to need.  Having a cocker spaniel it never comes low enough to bother the mother whilst giving plenty of heat for the puppies.  I have never felt able to trust any heating element at ground level.  I always fear they will be dug up chewed etc, I know a lot of people swear by them but I have found what suits me so doubt I will ever try them now.

I would recommend a heat pad.  You can buy them with anti chew cables now.  My litter that I had recently didn't try and chew cable as it can be tucked through a hole in the back of the whelping box, so they don't even realise it is there and by the time they do you won't need it on.  I removed it when they were 5 weeks old.
