Hi all,
I just got my new Irish setter puppy on Friday night.  The breeder told me that she has been doing solid poos until she put her on Purina Beta Puppy, then it was making them go all sloppy.  However the only food we have for her is Purina as that's what the breeder had told us she was going to wean the pups on to.  We brought her home, yesterday she went for her first injection, she's been playful and her poos were fine yesterday.  This morning her poo was more like a cow pat, and this afternoon her poo is like brown water.  She's still playing about but I noticed this morning as we have other dogs that she was eating a few kibbles of their food.  I called the emergency vet today and they said as she's been playing around she should be fine, and that it's more a case of she's been through a hell of a lot in the last 48 hours and her stomach is sensitive.  They said not to feed her until this evening and just to give her a very small amount of cooked chicken later on and see how she goes, and if she's not right within the next 24-48 hours to get her to the vet.  Can anyone give me any advice on what is a good sensitive food to give her, and also the vet said I can give her scrambled egg...I know I shouldn't question a vet but I know if my tummy was upset that would make me worse!  I have three Staffs and have never had this problem with them, they are more hardy than this little lovely and I am worried I am not doing right by her.
She's just having a little afternoon nap as I think we tired her out with playing!!
Any advice most welcome, from if I've done enough to what foods are good for young pups to wean her onto asap as I'm going to give that Purina to the local rescue home.  Hills science plan puppy the kibbles are too big for her!
Thanks guys x x

What was the breeders feeding before the Beta and why did she change before the puppies left?  Unless you mean she used it from first weaning and just put up with it not suiting  But then you say she was fine when you first got her so not really sure what is going on but the vet could well be right.  It is very common for puppies to get upset tummies when they first arrive in their new homes and yes, scrambled egg is commonly given and can work just as well as chicken, fish or any of the other easily digested foods recommended while things settle down.  If you are going to change her diet again be sure to do it very gradually over a couple of weeks.

Hi, sorry didn't make that clear, she weaned her from mum to Beta and had no other food before that.  She found that Beta was causing the puppies to get upset tummies so she switched to having a spoon of Beta with either chicken, mince or scrambled egg.  Now we have got her home and she's been on just Beta and we busted her eating our adult dogs' Eukanuba this morning and she's having the runs.  Poor mite.  Being that she's:
-left her litter
-come to a new home
-been to the vets
-had her first vaccine (which she screeched at)
-changed her food
I'm guessing all of that since Friday night will be what's done it....again any advice still welcome!

I am guessing that a breeder would not have had her on what you describe since weaning started about five weeks ago surely?

It could be that they had Beta puppy packs as that is what they were planing to fed, but actually ended up feeding something else with just a bit of the Beta mixed in, and now on straight Beta with all the changes it is not agreeing with her.

I would try to find out what the other main component of her diet before arriving with you was and fed that and gradually introduce something like Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved etc that are well tolerated by more sensitive tummies.
