Hi Everyone I am new to the forum I have a beautiful 6 mth old Welsh Springer and although we had him vacinated for KC he has picked it up. We are in the Coalville area and the vet says it is doing the rounds here as well. He goes to obedience class but there wasn't one this week so think he may have picked it up on his walks. He is on antibiotics and at the moment it appears to only be mild not like some of the stories I am picking up from the internet. As anyone any advice to try and prevent him getting it again. Obviously being a Springer he loves his walks and he can't understand why mum is not putting her walking boots and big yellow waterproof coat on to take him. Also how long do you think we should keep him in for? I have read 2 weeks but is that 2 weeks from when he has got it or 2 weeks after he finishes coughing? Any advice or tips on KC would be appreciated. Thanks
Our vet told us this week that we were fine to take Milo out as long as we limited his walks and took him out to places where he was unlikely to meet other dogs, so thats what we have done.
Honestly if we did not take him out twice a day he would go nuts, he gets a little stir crazy at the best of times :-)

From what I read it is 7 to 10 days after finishing coughing - I went with the 10 even though my dog - (like yours had been vaccinated) only had it mildly. There is no way of avoiding it - your dog has to socialise with other dogs. Not putting a dog in kennels I suppose would lessen the risk but lets's face it do you stay at home to avoid catching a cold? It is just one of those annoying things and although I was cross that I had forked out the money for vaccination and then she still had it making us miss our last two agility classes I would rather her have it mildly then full blown. The trouble is it is harder to diagnose when it is only mild and the dog is infectious before they start coughing anyway. I just walked mine away from other dogs as best as I could - until we were out of quarantine.
Thanks for the advice everyone it is many years since we had a puppy and he is so much part of the familly I suppose you just worry about doing the right thing. The antibiotics are kicking in now he is dashing around like a lunatic so we are playing in the garden with him and his pull toys but I think if he continues to improve I will start his 6.00 am walks again on Monday as we don't usually meet anybody else at that time. Hope Milo and all the other little sweethearts who have got it get better soon. Dx
their is a kennel cough epidemic thoughout the UK right now
