Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Bitch looking thin on AG

After much debate we have changed our bitch onto AG prestige, she had a litter of 12 pups 4 months ago and was fed Eukanuba before and till post weanng the was back on her ordinary food (cheapo working dog stuff from Farmway that she will eat as she tends to fussy)
She looked really good after the pups were all weaned and gone but for various reasons I wanted to feed her something "better". After consultation with the nutritionist at AG we decided Prestige was the way to go.She had it mixed in with her old stuff for a couple of weeks and now has been on it solely for about 2 weeks. I think she is definitely losing weight now though we weighed the food for her weight and she is having possibly slightly more.
She has become very active again and her coat hasn't really come back yet which I think makes her look thinner too.
I've emailed AG again but as yet no response (she did say she was away lecturing part of this week) so any thoughts anyone? Should I increase what we give her? She isn't a dog with a big appetite but she does polish the very small amount off very quickly!

With my lot I have always found they eat way less than the recommended amounts. Did your bitch eat more than the advised amounts on her previous food, if so it could be that she is one of those who need more than the advised amount on whatever food she is on.

I also have found that in the post whelp moult period that they do need more than their normal ration to get back into full condition following a litter.

My pups are now nearly 10 weeks old, bitch in full moult and on about 30% above normal rations.

Thank you Barbara, I don't think she was having more than the recommended amount before and she quite often didn't finish it up. Mind volume wise she was getting a lot more.
We fed her extra till the pups were about 12 weeks then crept it back down (16 weeks now), she looked well till a week or so ago, vet even commented on how well we had done with her after feeding 12!
I guess the answer is fairly obvious...give her more! She seems to like the AG I just wondered if it suited her.

just out of interest how much is she on, if The volume seems a lot less than on previous food?

She is having 250-280g per day. She weighed 27kg pre puppy and I think she is less now but feeding according to bag. Ness at AG said there is a lot less filler than in the cheap stuff hence the reduction in volume.

That sounds about right amount, though my 10 week pups are on that amount, as I am fedign it instead of the puppy.

It's a balancing act to find the right amount isn't it?

We are on AG Lamb & Rice.  I've got a 15 month gundog of 25kg on 2 meals of 225g per meal and a 5yr old terrier type mongrel of 13kg on 2 meals of 78g per meal.  I don't suppose either of those is what is suggested on the bag but you do have to start somewhere :), we were previously on Nutro but I had to drop amounts for AG.

I tend to check the feel and shape of the dog, the energy levels and the output - one of my boys soon leaves runny messages (sorry - yuk!) all over the garden to say it's too much food!  From your weights though it does sound as if she could do with a litle more, if she doesn't want to eat too much in one go can you add an extra lunchtime meal till she picks up?  It's worth noting that I can add weight to my dogs with only small increases of 5-10 g per meal so perhaps it won't take much til she's right.

I feed AG Prestige & have done for years. However, I did once weigh the amount of what i was feeding as someone on another forum wanted to know. It turned out that I was feeding almost double what AG advise on their bags but I was happy with that, the bitch looked well and she was maintaining weright.

As a general rule I always increase food if a dog is thinner than I'd like or reduce the food if the dog is a bit of a porker. I never do by what's on the back of the bag, I always use my own judgement.
