The advice on there seems to be to volunteer in some capacity with dogs to get  experience and a foot in the door :)

Why not volunteer for the RSPCA?
You meet dogs of all temperments and Ive found it to be truly rewarding as well :)

I have been reading this thread with great interest over the last few days... just something for you to think about> You previously wrote on another thread that you had starting kick boxing... and to cut the long story short that you didn't know if it was for you as you are slim and not very brave (sorry to ad lib). Do you realise what is involved in security work? If you want to work as a security dog handler, you are going to be required to have regular security experience first.. ie club work/events. Can you see yourself doing this? I am not trying to discourage your choice of career, especially as you are so enthusiastic, but please keep in mind what is going to be asked of you as a security employee. I know many female security workers who mainly work in clubs and they are tough as nails. They get a lot of stick, especially from men and are by no means slim! I'm not trying to cause WW3, it's just that this line of work didn't sound that well suited to you (obviously I don't know you, just have a sense from your posts).

Its ok Stormy i dont take offense!! I have decided with kickboxing i am going to carry it on, i think the weed in me is possibly more psychological than physical...

With the security training, i am aware of what it involves and i think i possibly, especially with more training at kickboxing, would be able to do the job physically, it would just take a bit of confidence to get to that stage.

I get lots of stick from kickboxing from the men and i get it everywhere from men, haha, think its my type of personality and the person i am, however i am not 100% convinced about this career now, not because of this factor, but because of the money involved to get to any stage. There is the license, then training involved, and i spoke to one company and they said you DO live with the dog at home, and i dont have a "spare" dog to be able to apply for this type of job...

So knocking this career on the head for a while while i have a good think, as it seems a lot of hard work and money for something where i may not be promised a job at the end of it anyway!!

Thanks to everyone who has given me advice and tried to help me along my choice, it has all contributed to my final decision!! :)

That website i looked at, the careers one, it looks so easy, but when you dive into what you need to do, its really not so easy at all!!

Maybe something a little easier, i would love kennel maid (is that the right name?) or something, but the pay is rubbish, should be more for the job they do!!

Its like nurses and firemen etc and jobs like that, its not very high paid and they are saving peoples lives!!!

What about working for an assistance dog charity? ie Guide Dogs for the Blind, Dogs for the Disabled..etc

Pay is better than some and there's a great variety of jobs within them :) Something I would seriously have considered in a different life ;)

im a kennel maid! yeah pay is rubbish.im off work at the mo because i had an operation few months ago so have to wait for my ligaments to heal fully before i go back to work.ive worked in kennels since i was about 14 just helping out and ended up carrying on with it, before op i worked at a working dog kennels that train fire investigation, bomb, security, cadaver, search and drugs dogs and this was the best job ive had! was so worth all the hard work! it took me quite a few years to get into the company but i did it! having worked in the rescue and bording side of kennels i was starting to not like going to work,it really breaks your heart to see dogs be in so much stress and be pts for things that could of been helped so easy! my big ambition is to have my own rescue kennels one day.....but untill then i need to be able to make money so that one day i will be able to do that :-)

I think if you can afford it, a kennel maid job is such a wonderful job to have, its so rewarding and i think the people that do that sort of job, do it for the reward, not the money

yeah it is a great job,im really lucky my boyfriend has a well paid job and likes me just to have a job that i love, which whatever i do it always comes back to dogs!

have you thought about setting up your own dog walking business??? my friend is a dog walker,its took her a while to get all set up with regulars but she loves it and she makes ok money.i usualy help her on busy days when im not doing anything. do u have experience with bigger dogs? because a lot of them do pull on the lead and are so strong! you need to get insurance and some have police checks done so that clients will feel more comfortable with giving your keys to their house.if i lived in a more built up area i would defo do it,but i live in the middle of no where!:-D

How much around a year to dog walkers get if you dont mind me asking?

We have german shepherds at home, so handling big dogs isnt a problem for me, even though my dog is a yorkshire terrier!! haha

Dogs are such an amazing creture, and i love them, would be so amazing to work in a job that gives off such benefits!!

im really not sure about how much she gets a year,have to ask her when i see her.she charges £8 for an hour walk and usually does about 6/7 dogs every weekday.

ive have a gsd too and a chihuahua! :-)

HAHA its a funny mix isnt it, chihuahua and gsd and yorkie and gsd lol! :-D

£8 an hour is really good!!! Might have to look into this one now its getting the contacts that is the tricky bit though...

yeah people always laugh when they see me walking them!

my friend didnt have much money at all to start off with so we spent ages posting leaflets that she made out to all the house in the area took us ages but thats what got the most people calling,she also made herself a website and advertised in few local papers,if you like walking its the best job ever! :-D

You have to stand out from the rest of the people who offer the service... decide if you will walk more than one dog at a time, whether you have any nice parks near where u live, whether you can offer 7 days a week... plus come across as knowledgeable and reliable. There is a girl who walks dogs at my park and she is a joke. Doens't know any thing about dog behaviour and walks up to six dogs at a time... scary stuff.

Ohh sounds good!! Sounds like she has done very well for herself, i love walking, its great, even in the rain i dont care, its good exercise

I live in like a little village, there are lovely parks not far from and fields, and canals to walk along with the dogs

I could walk a couple of dogs at once, i as have had experience with this with having 6 dogs myself, but i agree, its about knowing the dog, you cant really walk a greyhound with say a slower paced dog, as they will be walking at different paces, and i dont think that would work very well haha

id have a look at other dog walkers in your area see what they provide and what you can do to better it.
my friend walks each dog individualy except if they come from the same family,alot of the walkers pair dogs from different familys up and walk like that which from her experience with the clients is why they picked her because she never does that.good luck with it if you do decide to do it :-)

Id love to be a dog walker professionally :) but we dont have the money to allow me to start a business and have less money for a while while I got started and I dont have the time to do it outside of work as I would miss the time with my own doggies :)

Stuck with the 9-5 for the mo Im afraid lol But I do want to open a boarding kennels specialising in bull breeds one day and train to be a dog trainer too :)

If the pay was better I would be a kennel maid for sure but at the mo its either this security dog trainer or a RSPCA Animal collection officer, I was going to go for a RSPCA inspector role but I wouldnt be able to keep my temper and not floor the owners when dealing with animal cruelty cases face to face with the person who is guilty of cruelty!!

That is exactly like me, plus i wouldnt be able to control my emotions and i would end of blubbing my eyes out at every case no doubt!! :) I am really emotional when it comes to animals getting hurt!

I am going to research dog walker now, its just hard to begin it, but once your into it, i guess it is a good job..
