Hi everyone

Had a massive breakout recently of spots and i dont have the confidence to leave them without concealer. I found this product at boots, its £10 and its an anti blemish solution stick which covers the spots and also fights to get rid of them.

Has anyone used this or had experience with something similar?

I never wear makeup but for bad spots I get quinoderm from the chemist, it works wonders, although for a small outbreak I've found out that savlon works just as well and it's about £1.49 a tube!  Hope you get sorted.

I totally understand about wearing make up to cover spots when you're going out, but where possible if your at home and comfortable, take your make up off. Give your skin a chance to breath. Make up blocks the pores which makes the spots worse and spread.
Have you thought about using a blemish stick? Avon and body shop do good ones. It looks like a green pencil but when it goes on the spot it takes the redness out so normal make up over the top covers it.
Dont forget to keep skin clean, have a sauna, or just put your face over steaming water to open pores out. Another good tip is adding vodka or a dab of toothpaste onto the spot before bed to dry it out overnight. Change make up regularly so the bacteria doesnt have chance to grow.
I have sympathy, my skin is awful sometimes and can really get me down.

Be careful with that as steam can cause broken veins!  :)

Its so hard being a woman - i wouldnt have thought of that :-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 02.10.08 14:25 UTC
Well hopefully this new makeup i am investing in will stop the pores getting as blocked as its supposed to, and it should for the price, its not much, but i dont usually buy expensive as i cant afford

Can you find me a link for this, prefreably from the body shop as its easier to get to and access... is it really good?  Thre are so many treatments that say they work, and actually dont, that clinique one has such a bad review, so trying a no7 cover stick now and its non pore blocking... and cheaper so guess its a bonus, but its hard being a woman i agree!!

I used to use toothpaste, maybe i will try it again, i cant rmember if it works or not.. i heard mens aftershave is good as its really dries your skin out...?

Thanks guys!! :)

Correction, the cover stick from no7, its called:

Boots No7 quick cover blemish stick... is this the sort of thing you are talking about freds mum?

Looks fairly good, take a look on the boots website, it has good reviews, just copy and paste that name and you should find it...

- By Oldilocks [ru] Date 02.10.08 14:34 UTC
You'll know all about them when you get to my age!!!  :)  :)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 02.10.08 14:54 UTC

Oh them ...:-(
Just started getting them at the sides of my nose but that new mineral powder makeup, applied with a brush, sort of disguses them.
In another few years it will be a paper bag job I fear.

Checking out your profile where you list your hobbies as " kickboxing and clubbing", I would guess that you are a little too young to worry about such things.
Just go out and enjoy yourself - you've got plenty of time to worry about that old stuff ;-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 02.10.08 15:20 UTC
i wasnt worrying about it, i was just curious as to what it was! thats all! lol

Yorkies4eva...........by the time you are old enough to get broken veins (And not everyone gets them at all!!), you will be so relieved that you haven't got the multitude of other things older people get, that a little broken vein will seem like nothing at all!!  :) :)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 02.10.08 15:49 UTC
Erm... ok! lol! Ill look it up on the internet as to what it means then :)

I have a couple  by my nose from being an Outside Girl all my life (I think!!) Or could it be the Vodka?? LOL
Avon due a product for thread vains from their ANEW range brilliant stuff. Can hardly see them now.
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 02.10.08 21:12 UTC
Broken veins are just the little red lines that you get usually round nose and on cheeks, but they can be unsightly, cold winds etc can cause them so you should always use a moisturizer in winter. You can get green cover cream from Boots too. I always used clearasil to get rid of/prevent spots when i was a teenager up to about 35, but i had fairly greasy skin, so needed an astringent, I use L'oreal pure zone now - not quite as drying but I rarely, if ever get spots, but then I rarely wear make up either (too lazy, would rather have an extra 10 mins in bed) :-)
- By ali-t [gb] Date 02.10.08 21:35 UTC
As a body shop rep I can recommend the seaweed face mask for break outs.  It totally draws out all of the nasties and breakouts disappear quickly.  It is great to use the week before your period to prevent hormonal breakouts.
- By tessisbest [gb] Date 02.10.08 23:57 UTC
awww any freebies!!!!!
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 08:19 UTC
Thanks cheeky chow!! Ill give that a go, cant harm can it!!
I hope something works soon, its getting me really down now!! They just dont seem to dissapear!!
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 08:21 UTC
Ohh thanks for explaining what broken veins are to me dakkobear!!

I cant go out without makeup, dont feel confident to show my baby pure face without it haha!! Especially now people have seen me with it, i look dead without!!

Thanks everyone!! :)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 09:32 UTC
Just so everyone knows, i am going to buy some tea tree things from body shop on saturday
I am also changing my makeup to more expensive non pore blocking makeup

I hope this change helps to clear me up!! Couldnt find those seaweed face masks, found seaweed clay mask... is that what you meant?

I am also going to get some witch hazel to put over the spots and see if that helps too!! I am feeling quite happy about this, so i hope it works!! :)
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 03.10.08 09:38 UTC
Just be careful using too many things at once as you want to find the one that does the trick the best and its easier to do if theres less to eliminate...if that makes sense?
Hope it works for you. Ive just had an outbreak so am feeling a bit miserable :-(...but hey, its only spots - they go :-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 10:53 UTC
Had to read that twice freds mum haha, but i understand what you mean yes. I am going to buy these items and stick with them and see if they work, i tend to flit from product to product, but had this one spot way over a month, thats not normal is it!? lol!
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 10:53 UTC
Oh and sorry to hear about your breakout, its awful isnt it,really knocks my confidence, but then i think.. it could be worse!
- By philly256 [gb] Date 03.10.08 11:18 UTC Edited 03.10.08 11:21 UTC
Ive read this thread all the way through so I hope I dont duplicate what anyone else has said....
My top tips as a Hairdresser/Qualified beautician(Although I was mainly working as a hairdresser).....

Try to eat a healthy balanced diet..plenty of fruit and veg and drink water thats paramount for good skin

Make sure the products you use on your face foundationwise are oil free...this wont add any excess grease to your face to make your spots worse...and it wont clog your pores.

Try not to keep touching your face...grease can transfer from your fingers to your face again making spots worse, if you have to touch, make sure your hands are clean

Never ever squeeze a spot without steaming the face first to soften the skin and open the pores or you could cause scarring, use tissue on your fingers to protect your skin from your nails, this to can cause scarring.

At the end of everyday make sure every scrap of make up is removed using gentle oil free cleansers, toners and use a good moisturisor.
Repeat this routine on a morning to...good skincare routines will help keep your spots at bay

When your at home take all your make up off and let your skin breathe as much as possible...splash it with cold water from time to time to as this helps tighten any open pores you may have and will help to firm and  tone the skin naturally.

Face masks/scrubs etc should only be used once a week as they can be too harsh and although you dont want to add excess oil to your skin, taking your natural oils away can send your skin into overdrive making it produce twice as much oil to replace what its lost...hence this can lead to more spots.

Before you put on your make up an oil free face base serum is a good idea,it mattifies the skin and acts as a barrier for your foundation helping it go on smoothly without you having to apply to much....it is expensive ,but will last for ever as you only need a few drops each application.I use Lancome La Base Pro......Perfecting make up primer smoothing effect. It costs about 25 quid but its worth it.

Finally when you go to buy all these things look around to see whats out there, ask behind beauty counters for advice on the type of products your skin will need they are all qualified and are very helpful if you get stuck...

I hope this helps...

Good Luck

p.s broken veins are little red spider web like veins that occurr on your face when your skin has been over exposed to

1. the elements ie too much sun, wind etc with out using moisturisors with spf in them....check your moisturisors always contain these
2. Too much alcohol,smoking etc
3. Using products that are too harsh for your skin type.
4. Inncorrect skincare routines eg being too rough or over zealous with your skin

Dont worry though this usually only hapens over a period of time and if you keep a regimented skin routine, the risk of getting them is greatly reduced.

One last thing...if the spots are persistant and look more like acne a visit to the docs for a course of antibiotics may help
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 11:23 UTC
WOW philly256, i am going to print out what you have written!! Thats for taking the time to write all that out!! :)

That is actually really helpful, i have started drinking lots of water and i didnt know about having to steam your face before popping spots... if you were to leave the spot with a horrible yellow head, what would happen? Would it pop naturally or dissapear, are you supposed to pop spots, becuse lots of advice warns against it?!

I am going to check that my no7 new foundation is oil free now! lol, this is the one i hope to buy on saturday

I very rarly touch my face, i am actually scared of doing it, i never let my boyfriend touch it either!! I slap him if he comes near it haha!! :P
- By philly256 [gb] Date 03.10.08 11:28 UTC
I have found that as long as you steam your face first to soften the skin and use tissues to protect your skin from being scratched by your nails ) to gently pierce the spot first to prevent the skin from bursting when you squeeze,Hairdressing and beauty suppliers will sell them.
Never ever squeeze a spot directly but gently press either side then once squeezed cleanse and tone the area and leave it alone dont touch it and you should be fine.

Never ever attempt to squeeze  a spot without doing this as you can scar your skin and or force the impurities back into it and never attempt to squeeze a spot without a head unless its a blackhead which you can remove the same way as you would  a yellow headed spot
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 11:30 UTC
Ohh thanks for that, one more questions, sorry to be a constant pain haha
But by putting cleanser and toner on the open spot, would that not *block it up* as such? Would something a little more natural such as witch hazel be better?
x
- By philly256 [gb] Date 03.10.08 11:35 UTC
cleanser would remove the last of the impurities and make sure the area is clean...toner will help close the pores...but yes you could use something like witch hazel if you like to dab the area....Witch do a stick especially to dab onto spots to help reduce them this would be a good buy. Most important thoough is to keep your face clean and dont touch it to allow the spot time to heal and dont put make up on a spot for 24 hrs to allow the skin  to seal over cos this will block up the pores again
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 11:55 UTC
can i just ask

No 7 Intelligent Colour Foundation does that have oil in it, i cant seem to find it online the ingredients anywhere lol!

It does say it doesnt block your pores though, which is good yes?

I might try that then, didnt know that toner closed your pores, might have to buy some of that, was never sure what it did

Thanks again!! :)
- By ali-t [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:07 UTC
the new mineral make up foundations shouldn't block your pores.  they have no oil or water in them so should cause no irritation or blockages.
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:10 UTC
ohh thanks for that, was recommended that type of foundation at work a second ago, there are so many different ones, its hard!

just red up on toner, and i think if i wash with cold water, which i am doing, thats probably just as good as using toner... any advances on that?

x
- By philly256 [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:15 UTC Edited 03.10.08 12:18 UTC
It should say oil free on the bottle, but as it says it doesnt block pores i suspect that it will be oil free but best to check.

Toner is a must have...not only does it close and tighten pores it also whisks away any last traces of cleanser/oils etc leaving your skin fresh and clean

Boots No 7 is a good make up range thats fairly inexpensive.....they do do an oil free range as i have used it myself, just ask the girl behind the counter to keep you right.

Simple are also inexpensive and will do oil free cleansers toners and moisturisors if you dont want to pay out a stack of cash...and they are very very good I can recomend them as all ingredients are gentle on the skin, and I have used them in the past.

Tesco Skin Wisdom is excellent for cleansers, toners, moisturisors etc.....I use them now, also inexpensive and designed by one of the top beauticians in this counrty Bharti Vyas(Brazillian Waxer to the stars lol )

I use Lancome make up products myself, they are expensive but good.....ive also used Elizabeth Arden,Clinique and Estee Lauder....its just a case of shopping around within your budget till you find products that suit your skin.
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:19 UTC
Ill have an ask at the counter to see if it is oil free or not, she should hopefully be very helpful to get me the correct product

I have got some simple toner at home i think, but just never use it... might have a look into it again, if it clears my spots, then woopie!!

Thanks so much for that, its been very very helpful anyway!!! Wish me luck in finding my perfect makeup and my spots finally going!! :-D
- By philly256 [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:20 UTC
Best of Luck......im sure you will be fine if i can help anymore just pm me or ask on here im about most days at some point :)

Thank you!!! :-D :)
- By Stormy [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:56 UTC
I haven't read every single post on on this thread... but the ONE thing that cleared my skin was the yellow moisturiser from clinique. It is pretty expensive but you don't need to use a lot and I noticed results after about a week. I'm not one to advertise for those corporate bigwigs.. but I wouldn't want to live without it :-P
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 12:59 UTC
Hello Stormy

Is that what it is called, yellow moisturiser??
- By Stormy [gb] Date 03.10.08 13:10 UTC
No! I just looked it up- called 'dramatically different moisturiser' - if you decide to try it get the cream, not the gel ;-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 03.10.08 13:16 UTC
Thanks Stormy, i will look it up and investigate!! :)
- By philly256 [gb] Date 03.10.08 15:12 UTC
One more thing I forgot to add.....Apply make up with good quality brushes(expensive but a must),MAC do a good set off the top of my head, including foundation brushes. The mineral foundation that has been recomended on here comes with its own brush anyway but if you use any other foundation use a brush and make sure you wash them once a week. Also apply eyeshadow etc with brushes or cotton wool buds and use all cleansers and toners  with cotton wool pads never fingers.

Brushes, cotton wool pads etc, dont have grease on them like fingers do and therefore will not add any extra oil to the skin nor will it allow too much product to be put on the skin in one go, allowing it to be built up gently if needed, to not overload the skin.
They should be washed weekly in mild baby shampoo or use a bit of your cleanser and then rinsed well in hot  water  and air dried at room temperature with paper towels over them to stop dust collection whilst drying.

Washing them weekly prevents product bulid up and any grease from your skin being transfered back onto your face
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 06.10.08 08:35 UTC
I bought that no7 intellegent foundation, no7 concealer, bought some tea tree facial wash from body shop, and some simple toner... they are really dried out my spots and the skin around them is flaky, look awful now! But at least they are dissapearing, slowely...

If i keep the skin moisturised, will this keep the spot from drying out or will it still get rid of it but by not having the really peeling flaky skin??

Also bought some face masks which are for blemishs and applied one of those, and also did a facial steam wtih hot water!!

So hopefully all this will help, plus didnt wear makeup all weekend over the spots

I use Estee Lauder makeup brushes, really like these, and should do for price i paid haha

I will wash my makeup brush tonight or something, not washed it since i have got it, its such a pain cos if i wash it, it might not be dry by the next day lol!!
Ill wash it tomorrow morning actually, then it has time to dry!
Thanks again!!
xx
- By philly256 [gb] Date 06.10.08 08:48 UTC

>> If i keep the skin moisturised, will this keep the spot from drying out or will it still get rid of it but by not having the really peeling flaky skin??

Yes it will help as long as you use an oil free moisturisor......Just check the bottle says oil free before you buy.It will keep your skin soft and supple withpout adding any excess oil but is gentle enough not to cause the skin to go into oil production overdrive.
Moisturisors with oil in them will be too heavy for your skin and leave them feeling greasy.

>> I will wash my makeup brush tonight or something, not washed it since i have got it, its such a pain cos if i wash it, it might not be dry by the next day lol!!
> Ill wash it tomorrow morning actually, then it has time to dry!
> Thanks again!!

Put them on a clean towel covered with a paper towel  on a radiator or in the airing cupboard till morning if you cant leave them to air dry.....
Air drying is best but if your brushes are good quality(they sound like they are) they should be ok as long as its not too hot.

Glad to hear your skin is getting better, It sounds like your doing everything right... keep going though it will take a little while to be fully sorted out and depending on how oily/spotty your skin is, you may still get the odd breakout but following a good skincare routine should reduce this greatly.

Philly x
- By Stormy [gb] Date 06.10.08 08:48 UTC
Definitely moisturise! If you let the spots dry out too much they may scar, and flakey skin is almost as bad as spots IMO! Don't go too crazy with all your new products... your poor skin won't know what's hit it! Maybe try one new thing a week, then if you have a reaction you will know what caused it.. and conversely, if your skin improves you will know what to continue with! :-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 06.10.08 08:58 UTC
Firstly i will reply to Philly!

Ill have a check to see if my moisturiser is oil free or not, going to really moisturise tonight and make sure they dont dry out too much, as they look worse now all dried out and flaky than they did lol

But at least the rednes is going and things

Any tips of what to put in water when i steam, or is water sufficient enough?

Right ill do the brush cleansing tomorrow!! Gosh being a woman is so much hard work issnt it!!
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 06.10.08 09:00 UTC
Now to you Stormy!! haha

I know i have been thinking about my skin thinking "arghhh whats going on over loaddd" haha, because so many new things have happened... bit too late to take it slow though, i already introduced them all haha

Nothing bad has happened yet, so just cant wait to get home and moisturise them now lol

Thanks everyone!!! :)

You guys are FAB!!! :-D
