i have a 5 half month old puppy i would like his feet a bit tighter and to come up a bit more on pasterns .I know these things may well improve as he matures, but have been told to do road work with him.
How much should i give him? and is this daily???

In general 5mins per month

If you do a search I think their is  a post running on this subject.

5 months seems a bit young but I guess a little won't hurt, what breed? I have only just started to road walk/bike my almost 18 month old to give him a more overall toning. He gets most free running so some controlled work will do him good.

I was told a few years back by a judge to walk my youngster on rough surfaces i.e pebble beaches etc to tighten up his feet.  It worked a treat.

I agree, pebble beach or gravel car parks etc are very good for tightening feet, as is walking on concrete but at 5 months I wouldn't overdo it as pavement pounding also puts more stress on their joints and growing bones. As socialisation is also so important at this age I would try to devise a walk to a park/field that maybe takes 10 mins max to get there, a wee run/sniff around for a few mins and then 10 mins home twice a day would be as much as I would consider.

I've always done road work with my dogs as soon as they're able to go out.  5 mins per month of their life, so my young lad is on 20mins.  But I walk him, not running or with a bike.  This has worked for me regarding developing muscles slowly but I've heard for feet it's gravel/shingle/stoney beach.

My dogs who has the most superb feet was only ever road walked until 5 months in fact she was never let off the lead until after this as a experiment to see what developed.  She has also the most fantastic muscle tone although if I do say so myself her topline is not as good as my others who were always free run from babies.

He's 4 months (5mins x 4 months = 20 mins).  Just cross your fingers it works for him as it did my other dogs as he's a bit silly on the move at the moment :-(
