My dog died this afternoon.  He was poisoned.  I hadn't a clue what was happening until he just lay down panting heavily.  He was a springer spaniel so this was really unusual - he had been running around the field chasing pheasants only an hour before.  The vet said it was most probably warfarin he had eaten a couple of days before.  He coughed a little last night, but had been eating well, pooing etc no problems.  I'm devastated!

My Heart goes out to you. We lost our Westie over a year ago in exactly the same circumstances, she had picked some poison up somewhere, we never found out where. We walked the 2 westies together all the time. Our other westie was fine. To loose your dog is heartbreaking enough, to loose one like this is totally devastating. I am so sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss.
We had a problem with rats some time back and I was worried about putting bait down with my dogs around, but the Pest Control Officer told me that with the latest rat poisons, a dog would have to eat it's own body weight to be fatal, so maybe that wasn't the problem. :(

So sorry to hear about your dog :( We (Pest control officers) rarely use warfarin these days...due to resistance among rat populations. This doesn't mean that unlicensed products that have been hanging around for years aren't being used illegally :(

thank you for replying, doesn't get any easier!  Vet said it was warfarin that had been in his system for a couple of days - suggested he had nibbled something that had been poisoned or the poison itself.  Unfortunately for Buster he wasn't sick - apparently this stuff works on rats as they can't vomit - Buster had retained the poison in his system.  Usually they have to eat their body weight for it to be fatal.  We didn't notice anything wrong until it was too late, but the vet did all she could.  Miss my little mate so terribly!  I can't bring him back, I know that, but its so hard to make sense of why this happened, just such an awful shock. He's probably up in the clouds chasing every bird that comes his way (typical bloke :-))
