i know this may sound strupid but way do dogs howl? i have 20 month old staff mix and since monday evening he has been howling non stop. How can i make him stop? can anyone help, your advice will be welcome.

I think dogs howl for many different reasons. A young male howling brings in season bitches to mind. Either that, or he might be left alone for longer periods of time, than he's able to cope with? Either way, it's rather disturbing, unless you live in a very secluded place?

Thanks i have also a female dog its mother she has been sprayed 2 years now. the dogs are left by me while am at work but my son or partner is at home most days, so i dont think that the howling is that he is left for a long period. is there anything i can do to stop the howling. its very distressing.

is it a full moon at the moment ?

During the 4 or so days that are bitches are at their most desirable both the boys will howl if left alone to do it. We take them into the bedroom to keep them quiet or our neighbours would have a field day with abusive emails and ranting (for the howling I wouldnt blame them).
If this is a recent thing and he isnt ill in anyway I would bet it is an in season bitch near by.

Some dogs howl 'cos they enjoy it! I have 5 huskies, and they often do a group howl - i call it singing, and i absolutely love to hear it :) It only lasts for about 30 seconds and it's music to my ears. In fact i only have 1 dog that barks, and the others all look bemused when he does it.

most likely...our lad loves to serenade the ladies when in heat... :(
to the op, has he been a bit frantic when outside? running about and sniffing fairly urgently? (not sure how to describe it lol- do everyone elses boys do this when a girly has her season?), is he off his food at all?

I have a bitch that howls most nights in her sleep on the odd occassion my other bitch will join in, the boys tend to be ok. I just call her name in a calm voice and she shuts up. She doesn't do it during the day so I put it down to a doggy dream.
My male dog howls every night for five minutes if my bitch is away ( if she is in season she goes on hollys to her breeder). He goes upstairs and sits on my bed to do it, so he is at the highest point in the house he can access. i think he is caling her home!

Then how does anybody know???? ;-)

I knew somebody would ask that! :-D
I only know because we have heard him a few times now, when we've been out the front of our house and the phone has been ringing. Also, a while back, I went out with the children, and Oscar didn't realise my OH was still at home upstairs. When the phone rang he howled until he realised my OH was home. I think maybe he doesn't like the noise and he knows it doesn't stop if nobody is home.

Mine howl if we allow the phone to ring more than twice - it's quite handy if we're outside and can't hear the phone, but a bit of a nuisance when you're in the loo, and a real pain (for the neighbours) if we're actually out!

My Basset mix howls at the church bells but does stop when I tell him.He doesn't do it to anything else so I assume he's joining in.

Mine only seem to howl when the fire engines come past on siren.

Ollie is (or was) my only howler... usually when the girls are in season... but... bogeyman had me in stitches... I bought a few £1 sqeaky balls from tesco.. and he loves them.... I hate the darn things.. however.. last night went to bed in his crate.. gnawed/sqeaked ball a couple of times and howled... and repeat :-O (picture howling dog playing piano.. replace piano with squeaky ball :-)

How about turning the ring off when you go out, or unplugging it? :-)
>How about turning the ring off when you go out, or unplugging it?
It's an old phone so the ring is unturnoffable, and we can't unplug it because of needing to take messages for The Boy's business.

i know a dog that howls with his head held high to edith piaf everytime the spec savers advert comes on he does it and stops as soon as its finished, he is so engrossed in it he cant hear his owners when they speak to him they downloaded some of her music and yes its definately edith and not just the advert. he either just sings a long with her high pitched voice or he likes the french accent sacre bleu. molly.

That advert is enough to make anyone howl!

Yes, my neighbours have heard him, but they couldn't hear the phone. They don't mind though as they have two goldies who can be rather vocal, so the occassional howl is nothing :-)

it sure is i hope mine dont start its allready a mad house here.
My mum had a deerhound who howled through the theme tumes to anything. Other music didnt bother him but the TV theme music always had him going - amazing how quick you can get to be with the mute button on the remote!!
I think i would smother the phone with a big cushion when i went out!!

My sprollie howls if I leave the house without giving him his biscuit, then the pup barks at him when he does it.
He also howls at agility shows if I have taken my other boy out of the van to compete with.

Mine howl, just for the joy of it! :D
