What does "matador breeding" mean?
- By Blue Date 27.09.08 00:32 UTC Edited 27.09.08 00:42 UTC
The term Matador is used for a male dog that has been used so much at stud he dominates the breed/pedigrees for years to come.   It is very common in the UK this type of Matador breeding practice with people often using the top winners at stud rather than looking around and thinking a few years down the line.  The problem is whilst they can bring great qualities they also bring loads of genetic traits and often hidden polygentic faults that don't surface till 2 or 3 generations down the line when grand children and mated back to grand children.  It also reduces the gene pool.

Quite a lot of Countries in Europe seem to be addressing this issue for example Sweden made changes to try and stop this practice and here is an example from the Danish KC site on a particular breed.

We have completed The Danish Kennel Club's "Breeder Education"

We follow the Danish Kennel Club's ethicall recommendations, where they state that a bitch should not be bred from, until she is fully developed.

The Danish Kennel Club has recently defined a limit to how many puppies a Welsh Springer Spaniel should have in Denmark = 18 in its entire lifetime. All offspring over this limit is described as Matador-breeding (over-usage of an individual) - and is not thought to be "favourable for the breeds development". We have given it quite some thought - how we want our future breeding to be - It is not "just" something you do.

some people indeed follow ' the flavour' of the week champion! so often i have asked our breedclub to  have a scheme  which is used with horsebreeding .. having a stud used by  lets say 5 bitches  .. wait for them to be scored .some are "picked" out by the club .. so a random choosen amount of progeny are tested .. if they come up with  a certain percentage of  good health/show/working-results the dog is either free to be used by others or is asked when not has proven to give reasonable healthy etc  pups ;. to be removed from breeding/ or only to be used to certain lines if needed/asked for.
then the genepool doesnot get too small .... as all dogs get their chance! even the topwinner could be asked to withdrawn from breeding ...as like said they are not always those  just bringing in the  good points ... i am all for it ..

parzac, that sounds like a good idea. That certainly applies my breed often the latest popular champion is used an awful lot before many of his offspring come out.

i work and have worked with this since my very first litter.  i use my studdogs on several  bitches who have themselves proven to give good healthresults, good quality etc in earlier litter
i organize  every now and then a sort of "progenyshow" asking breeders who have used our males to come with the puppies, youngsters, adults  produced by them  ..
invite a judge/friend to come and see the  dogs .; give honest opinion .. it is like a little "show" and we do some working tests to see if the workingability is still there ..
ofcourse i am in lucky position to have  fields, space etc to invite breeders/owners ... but i think even on small scale as a sort of familyday one can arrange to see what a dog realy produces . and then decide if it makes sense and if there is any need for a  dog to continue to be used as stud ...
dont always expect your breed/local club to organize this, you can do it yourself aswell ..  even together with other studdogowners/breeders
it requires honesty towards your own dogs, your own breeding programm and towards the love for your  breed in general ..
but at end of the day all benefit ...
not every  (top)male has the quality to be a good producer !
