Hi guys
Not sure if you have read my previous post about my 5 year old shih tzu Gizmo.
I quite upset when my rescue shih tzu was a puppy (now 5) we took him to the vets as his back was curved and he had a rather eggy shaped head and he never wagged his tall (Ever). Over the past few years his back has gone really arched and is walking rather funny and has been back and forth to the vets. a few weeks ago was really scarey he started foaming at the mouth and then was sick loads of yellow slim, he then seemed to have some sort of mini fit. I rushed him straight to the vet and they said they werent sure what was wrong but said its more than likely to do with his brain and spinal cord. They did an emergancy xray and that didnt show nothing with his bones. They suggested taking him for a MRI scan in glasgow. The vet spoke to the insurance company on my behalf as by this time I was rather upset. They said they wouldnt consider the claim as it was on his records before he was insured about his back etc. The vet has said the MRI scan is probley going to cost about £1500, and even then he said that might only give us a diagnosis, and then they would be treatment or management of the diagnosis. The vet suggested putting him on a 30 day course of tablets to stop his fits and also a 5 days course of tablets to stop him being sick. Im soo worried as I dont know what to do. When we got home he had another fit and his back legs cureld underneath him, I called the vets and spoke to another vet who said it would pass and keep him comfortable etc. She then said "you know sometimes its better to be cruel to be kid". I knew what she was meaning but Im a little upset at the min. What would you guys do in my situation? I really dont want him to suffer, but also dont want to give up on him. Hes obviously in pain as he is having these fits, being sick, walking funny etc. Over the past years I have never seen him wagg his tale and now he just curls up in a ball and doesnt play with my other 3 dogs and sits there sleeping.
Last night he had another fit and this time has lost control of his bladder and was covered in excriment and wee. I teleponed the vet and was told to call her in the morning and let he know how he was and she would try and visit today. I poped to the garage at the end of the street and cam back home to find my two other shih tzus barking and going mad, Gizmo had had another fit and again lost control of his bladder etc, he wasnt moving and his eyes where looking up at me. I phoned the vet. They said they would do some tests today and give him some medication. I have just got the dreaded phone call to say they recommend that we put him to sleep. Im so so upset My partner is away on a course today and is on his way back. Im leaving now when my lift arrives to go to the vets and say my goodbyes. I dont know how im going to cope with this alone and this was the only place I could think of to come to talk. Thanks guys for listening. Good bye gizmo, I love you loads. x x

Oh Gosh I'm so sorry.
It would seem that you've come to the hardest decision you can make so I can only offer you support and my best wishes.
Poor baby. xxx

I'm so very sorry
xx

Poor Gizmo. :( I think you're doing the right thing for him - the poor little chap is suffering and there's no guarantee that he'll ever be better. It's the hardest thing to do, but it's the last great kindness we can give our friends.
Ooh thats so awful. Poor sausage.
Time is a great healer and take solace in the fact you did everything you could and gave him the best life. You know what they say - only the good die young. He was too precious for this life.

I am so sorry that Gizmo has worsened. I know you were hoping he would be with you longer. What a day for your partner to be away. It's such a difficult thing to do but Gizmo won't be suffering anymore. Sending some supportive hugs.

I'm so very sorry. :(

So sorry to hear about poor Gizmo. :-(
> It's the hardest thing to do, but it's the last great kindness we can give our friends.
I agree. It is heartbreaking but sometimes you just know in your heart it's the right thing to do.

Oh I'm so sorry to read this. It doesn't sound like Gizmo is enjoying life at all anymore so you're definitely doing the best thing you can for him. To let him go peacefully while you stroke his head and talk to him is the best thing you can do for your boy - no matter how hard it is for you. We'll all be thinking of you today, and remembering the times we've had to let our own much loved companions go :-(
