Anyone know or has themselves taken a year out ie a career break and if so what did you do?

Never done it myself but I know a few people who have, most of them have done some voluntary work, one in Malawi working for the UN, one in Uganda working for a charity, another who spent some time travelling and then a couple of months in Africa working for Homes for Humanity (building homes / schools in poor rural communities).

Only one of them returned to their old career, the others carried on doing development or charity work

I haven't taken one (yet!), but I know lots of people who have. Some have gone to start their own businesses (with the safety net of having a job to fall back on if it all goes pear shaped) but most have used it to go travelling.  One chap is leaving our department tomorrow to travel Asia for 6 months :-)  One friend is taking a career break to enable her be at home full-time for the first few years of her daughter's life; and another has gone to help her husband in the business that he started whilst he was on career break a few years ago :-)

The organisation I work for allows for a career break of up to 5 years and during that time you can be self-employed, employed in a family business or work for another company as long as it is outside the UK.
