hiya my bitch had 4 puppies on mon morning her 1st litter everything has been going fine been checked by vet and he is happy with her and pups she is feeding them well and tending to them but about 1/2 an hr ago she was getting a bit fretfull she got out of her whelping box and started whinning so i let her out when we came back in she got back in the boxand tried to take one of the pups out of the box i calmed her down and placed the pup further up the box with his litter mates she is back in the box at the moment and she has let them all feed from her iam just worried if she will do it again and is there anything i can do to stop her if she keeps trying to do this many thanx trina
Is the box in a quiet place away from other dogs? It sounds to me as though she was trying to take them to a safer place, I don't know how big your dog is but is it possible to create a cave like environment for her and the pups? Mum may feel a bit safer then. :-)
the box has a roof on it so its like a cave and she is away from the main living part of the house and only i have been with her she just seemed very confused she only tried it a couple of times and she hasnt tried it since she has been leaving them for a little while and sitting with me on the sofa but as soon as the pups squeak she is back in the box tending to them iam just a bit nervous as its my first litter thanx for your advice
hi saffie ,shes doing this because she is confused !!! you need to just keep an eye on her and pups for awhile (maybe a couple of weeks ) i had my girl and her pups in my bedroom for the 1st 3weeks then brought them down stairs ,if she is will to tend to them dont worry to much ,good luck :)
thanx she as been outside and toileted a few times today and seems to have totally settled since then it is a worrying time i think she has realised its okmto leave the pups for a little while..
Yeh when its their first time they will get nervous about leaving their puppies.... just try and make sure that other people dont go anywhere near her 'cave' or the puppies for a good few weeks... so that she gets settled with them first.
