I have a 14 month old gundog breed who at the age of 11 months was diagnosed with bilateral lower lid entropian.  My vet has advised me not to have this operated on until she is 2 years of age as he says sometimes it can correct itself without the need for surgery as the head is still growing.

I just wondered what the chances of this happening are.  Has anyone had a dog which went through this period and the entropian corrected itself without the need for surgery?

How badly are the eyes affected? If it's causing her problems by making her eyes uncomfortable I'd get it done sooner rather than later.

Apart from a little tearing on the odd day it does not seem to cause her any trouble.  She is not pawing at her eyes and seems her normal self with it.  She has no discharge from the eyes.  I hvae heard that certain breeds go through this phase but wonder if they come out of it or if it always ends up with surgeery.

My 2 chows both had this from quite an early age and I had the same advice from my vet. By 2 years of age both had improved but 1 still needed surgery.

Like your girl it didn't seem to bother them and they didn't paw at their eyes although the vet did check their eyes weren't getting damaged. My boys had tearing most days that ran a little down their faces but their lashes only just touched the eye just next to the lid. If your girl is better than this than you may be lucky.  Hope you are :)

Thanks Lunamoona you have given me a bit of hope.  I have heard that certain breeds can go through this phase but have never found it documented on the internet.

It's very hard to find practical info on the internet, just a load of medical stuff that vets would understand.

With my boys, the one with bigger bone grew into his skin and the finer one didn't.  My boys aren't show dogs so surgery had little impact with the scars hardly noticable, although as always I was stressed.

Vets can also do a 'running stitch' which remains in for about a week. This holds the skin away from the eye to stop any damage. I know my Vet does it on Shar Pei puppies to stop damage to the eye.

Its strange really as some days the eyelashes appear to be more in her eyes and other days they are hardly touching the eyelids.
