Came home this afternoon to find my youngest girl in the kitchen surrounded by various brown red pools(i thought sickness at first).  She was completely limp and couldn't stand up.  Cold to the touch.  Rushed her to the emergency clinic immediately as all the vets are closed here in italy on Saturday afternoon unfortunately.  Turns out that she has a Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis - very serious.  Vet couldn't find  a vein to put the drip for 30 mins.  The veins were empty.  Eventually managed to get a vein and did a glucose test - result 20 which is almost no sugar.  Vet has told me that it could be caused by a virus or something which she has eaten or eaten something which has gone off.  It's a very serious condition and we need to hope that she pulls through.  She is under a heat lamp at the moment also as she was also hypothermic.  Has this ever happened to anyone ?  Did the dog pull through ?  I would be absolutely heartbroken if something happened to her.  One good thing is that before leaving the clinic went to see her again and the inside of her mouth was more pink again.  Her reactions were also slight better.  LEt me know if anyone has had this before.  Don't know what to think or do.  Can't stop thinking about her there in the clinic.

Yes, we picked it up from a dog show
Within 24 hours Abby was very poorly and was in the vet on a drip.
She was passing pure blood.

I'm sure the vet treated Abby with Metronidazole once I'd discovered that someone
had got a dog at home....that was sick and they'd been to the show with it's housemate  grrrr.
As at first they the vets thought it was just a bout of nasty colitis.
It took a week of nursing her back to health, I was temping at the time so had to have a week off unpaid.
The first few days were awful, I had to sleep on the sofa to make sure I could make the door intime to let
Abby out, eventually it did settle down.

Fingers crossed for your girl.

Thanks for your kind words.  I am praying that she is ok.  Thought she was dead when I arrived home as she is one who is really lively - sometimes too lively lets say !!  Vet told me she is in shock and would have probably been dead if it had gone on an hour or two more.    She is in the clinic now with 24 hour care.  Will call them first thing in the morning again.  Was pleased to see that after 30 mins of the drip she was starting to react again.  She was also passing pure blood.  There was no smell to it thats why I thought sickness.  Luckily I have her room right next to mine when she comes home so I can here her immediately.

One of my bitches had this when she was about 18 months...we were in the garden, she suddenly collapsed, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea everywhere. After rushing her to the surgery where I worked, let myself in and with the vet on the phone gave her injections of ab's and c/steroids, put her on a drip and took her home to rest. She made a full recovery in a couple of days. She is 6 years old now :)

Hope your girl recovers as quickly x

Thanks to all.  Haven't had any telephone calls from the vet during the night or this morning so no news is good news.  Unfortunately won't know anything till about 12 as they have strict rules about when you can phone and when you can go there.  Will keep you all informed

Just a quick update.  Just got back from the vets and she is making a full recovery.  She's offended because I left her there all night !!!!!  but she's back on her feet as mad as ever again.  They're keeping her under observation today and to do blood tests etc. but probably I can take her home tomorrow.  A big sigh of relief ...............

Hi spugsy

I hope your girl is on the mend and look forward to an update.

One of mine spent the Easter weekend in the emergency hospital with the same condition - vomitting slightly on the Friday with traces of blood which was treated at my own vet but she went downhill quickly on Saturday and had to be admitted that evening.  By Easter Sunday morning I was convinced we'd lose her as she was pulling out the drips despite being in awful pain and very weakened.  Then she had two really explosive bursts of bloody (all fluid) D&V and seemed in less pain following that.  12 hours later she began to improve and by Monday evening she was pretty much back to normal.  It was a very frightening experience and horrible to see her in so much pain as well as leaving her behind at the clinic but thank God she was in the right place and getting the best treatment :) By the Tuesday morning no-one would have guessed she'd been ill at all except for having both front legs and a part of her neck shaved.

Hopefully your girl will turn the corner just as quickly.

Very best wishes, Teri :)

Fantastic :) :) :)  LOL, we were both posting at the same time so didn't have benefit of your update but sounds as though she's following a similar pattern to my own girl.

Thanks again.  Actually the vet who I saw this morning said he couldn't actually believe it was the same dog after the description of her condition on arrival yesterday.  The one who I saw yesterday is not on duty this morning but he phoned her while I was there.  Syria went downhill very quickly too.  She had some small vomits of watery materials in the morning(which I didn't worry about too much) and two hours later was surrounded by pools of pure blood and completely collapsed.  Thank god she has made it.  She's a bit of a pest(she's a black pug) but we love her as much if not even more than the other two just because of the character which she has.  Vet has told me that she can probably go home tomorrow evening.

It's a horrible experience.  I didn't think I was going to make it with her to the clinic with the state she was in.  Wouldn't want anyone to have the same experience.  Syria too has all he legs shaven(they couldn't find a vein with blood in it) and also on her neck.

Probably because she's a pest she's a bit of a fighter when it comes to illness - I think that gives them a better chance but hits us harder when they are obviously very ill as seeing them flat and weakened is so out of character.

ACE!!!  Bet you can't wait :)
ps. My girl wasn't too chuffed at being left either :-D

A couple of years ago my dog was passing blood back and front and was put straight on a drip.  The vets kept her in for 2 days and after the first 24 hours they were preparing us for the worst.  She bounced right back and after about a week or so you wouldn't have thought there'd been anything wrong.

It wasn't until a few months ago that I realised what might have caused it.  The days before she was taken poorly she'd picked up something in the park which looked liked a big piece of bread (gone before I could get anywhere near her).  This particular park is in our town centre and I am guessing the bread was probably a dropped burger or similar with onions.  When I read what onions actually do to a dog's insides I am convinced this is what caused her condition.

I am pleased your 'pest' is well on her way to recovery. :-) They do like to give us frights don't they?

Just a quick update.  Spoke to the  vet this morning.  She is much better - no more sickness or hemorrage.  They are going to start her on some food today to see how she does.  I need to phone them at 5 again to see if I can take her home.
- By Teri Date 22.09.08 12:38 UTC
All sounding good spugsy :)  Everything crossed that she's back in your arms this evening.  Then you can start recovering from the stress you've been under since she first became so ill.  I think we forget about ourselves and focus so much on them that it's only when the anxiety is finally relieved that we realised we're wrecked :-D

Best wishes, Teri
