Hi everyone

I currently work as a people development administrator. I only recently started the job and its ok, but it doesnt fulfil what i want from a job in life. I want something more active and with a bit more money... Money isnt everything but you need a lot more than i am on to get by comfortably in life.

I have thought about all sorts of different jobs, electrician, ict technician, my dream job would be with animals, but the pay is simply not enough and i cant be a vet as i am too squimish!

Any ideas?? Dont want to get stuck in a rut with no other way out!

I like the electrician idea.. have you looked into it much? It's the kind of job that will be required no matter how upset the economy is, you would be doing something different everyday and not stuck in an office! OK, not very related to animals, but your clients might have the odd dog or cat!! Plus it would have to pay better than BUPA right?

I'm with electrician too. It's so difficult to get any tradepeople at all, they seem to be able to pick and choose their jobs :-)

I was a branch manager of a reprographics company before being made redundant and stumbling into my current job as a bus driver and actually I like it, it was intended to be a short term thing but I'll probably just stay here now. I earn over £30k a year for short shifts and no hassle and I meet lots of interesting people. It's funny how our ideal jobs can be something we would never have thought of.

You earn 30k for being a bus driver??!!! Are you serious!!! I didnt realise they were on such a good wage?!....

I have applied for some information from the open university today on a web design course, i am quite handy with computer and i do like them, so maybe something along a job of that kind would be better suited to me, it involves more thinking, and the wage isnt bad! lol

Electrician... my boyfriend is an apprentice electrician, last year and its so hard when you are learning the trade as the money is rubbish!! Once he is qualified tho, he expects to be on a fair bit... its just getting to that stage from having money to having none...

Thanks for you responses guys!!

Yep, 31 last year and probably make 34 this year, sick pay, uniform, good pension - easiest money I've ever made :-D

I have qualifications in desktop publishing, photography and graphic design as well as my basic o grades and highers but can't be bothered looking for a 'proper' job now. It suits me and my dogs to just have a job that pays the bills and that I can forget about as soon as my shift is over.

Good luck with whatever you choose :-)

Are these First buses? Which buses are they? Do you need qualifications to become a bus driver or do you just apply and get the job?
What are the hours? Are they unsocial?

Quite interested!! The money is good and driving is nice, its just the yobs you get on buses which would scare me !

Nope First get less than us, I believe they're on £9 something an hour. I work for Lothian Buses in Edinburgh starting salary £10.45 an hour. I work nightshift at £12.02 an hour with time and half and double time for days off, plus a bonus if you work both Sat and Sun etc. Shift patterns can be flexible to suit you once you have some time under your belt. No qualifications necessary but a sense of humour and patience are helpful! We have our own training school, all you need is to be over 21 and have held a full clean (car) driving licence for at least a couple of years.

My next door neighbour has just had some tiling done and the bloke charged £230.00 per day labour alone . This is the going rate for a ' skilled ' workman apparently !!!

Hmmm this is what i mean! There are so many jobs out there, and a bus driver, i would of never thought of as a job at all!! Gosh, the wage is fantasic even for first buses. And its quite a nice job when you get driving around etc, its not horrible is it.
Did some research, and its around 8.50, so yh around 9 pounds an hour!

I am only 20 though, but held a clean full license for 2 years....

Thanks for your help everyone!!! :) :)
