Topic Dog Boards / Health / CT Scans

Has any one had a CT scan done on their dog?  Can you tell me anything, risks, side effects from the contrast, etc.?
Facing one tomorrow and I feel we've been railroaded into it - basically told today they can do it tomorrow.

TIA

Only CTs in humans I'm afraid.
Much more radiation than a normal chest x-ray for example and the contrast material (Iodine) may cause allergic reactions.
On the whole pretty safe and widely used.

it is a commonly used procedure in large referral practice, but can be expensive and as said, it has a lot more radiation than normal radiographs. why is a scan needed and what area?

My dog has had an MRI but not CT. CT is Xrays not contrast. Why are they doing it? If you aren't happy with it you can always decline - they need your signed consent. :-)

I have had a CT scan myself - of my chest - no side effects as such immediately - but obv is a lot of radiation, and a dog would need a GA to get them to stay still - so GA risk is probably the main thing. Unless they have said they are using contrast materials etc as well for something specific?

She's had a weepy eye and two flushes haven't taken care of the problem.  The ophthalmologist referred her and during the consultation the ENT booked the scan.
Because of how suddenly this appeared, the fact she has had no history with weepy eyes since birth, and this is only one eye, she is convinced there is a foreign object, i.e. grass seed, and wants a contrast scan.

There's a load of questions that surfaced after the consultation, and a huge feeling of unease at not knowing.  We are supposed to be going to the hospital after hours for the scan, and we know the cost - in money.
Another concern was we want to mate her next year and wondered if this had any effect on those plans.
