Topic Other Boards / Foo / Decision!!

Well today my OH found out today after weeks of waiting that he WON'T be made redundant, phew!! :) He had only been with the firm 8 months & wasn't entitled to any redundancy pay so would be relatively cheap to loose so he was very much at risk but all the people who are being made redundant have been told today & he isn't one of them!! HOWEVER...because he felt so exposed he approached a couple of recruitment consultants & had a second interview for a position on Wednesday & has also just found out they have offered him the role!! So in the space of a few hours he's gone from potentially having no job to having two & having to make a tough decision!!! Think they'll be some heavy conversations over the wknd...he had hoped that the decision one way or the other would be made for him so he wouldn't have to make it, but life's never that simple!!  This new job has a few pros going for it the biggest being it's more money & less travelling but the prospects at his current employer are better however they could continue the cut backs & although he's safe no he might not be in 6 months time, especially if the economy continues to decline (he works in construction now!) - ARGHHHH!!!

Why is life never simple???? I know we shouldn't be complaining, especially as there will be a lot of people upset after today but we have so much other stuff going off at the moment (wedding, family & friends ill) that it would have been nice for this not to add to all the stress!!!

I need a big glass of wine now, have been on edge all morning...roll on 6pm!!!

Good news and even better news.
A bit of research need on  both companies futures I would think.
So glad it's working out well for you both... such a relief.

Thanks toolz, think recent events in America have made our decision, not looking like the credit crunch will be over any time soon so if one of us can get out of the worst affected industries I think we should jump at it! Here's hoping it's the right decision....now if only I could be as successful in my search... thanks again!

Keep positive and enjoy yourself... that's the key esp. if you're  getting married :-)
It's not all doom and gloom out there.

lucky you, my boyfriend has just been handed his notice AGAIN. worked on it for a month at start of summer, then finally was told he was being kept on, much to our relief, but last friday he was given the letter again. he works for a lage house building company, and nobody is buying any houses. its an absolute nightmare, mine is the second wage, enough just to pay bills, but not enough to live on as it were. we're only 23 and 28 years old and have only been in house 2 years. overtime for me i think!!

Were in construction the ones in real trouble are well known Persimmons, Barratts, Willmott Dixon. The good ones are moving out of domestic into more commercial Galliford Try for eg. Umm the real advice is check the accounts at Companies House you can also contact Risk Disc say you are interested in purchasing but want to look at reports on line, they add risk elements such as assetts ect..
Its going to get worse, housing assoc, should be ok as they have Govt. funding so are buying up land that larger firms are releasing, with the housing market falling speculative building is in trouble they will just build to order. Hope thats of help!!

Sorry to hear that suz1985 :( I know there are a lot of people facing redundancy probably even more after the Lloyds TSB & HBOS merger announced today so we should be counting ourselves lucky!  I hope something comes up for him soon.  No idea where in the world you live or if this is even a viable option but I know certain companies are hiring to help with the Olympics in 2012, they are hiring in the 00's too!

we're up in scotland so not really an option, though if it came to it we may have to consider it. hes an electrician by trade but started as an assistant site agent at persimmons a yr and a half ago, so no redunduncy pay if he does go :(
not good times for us.

> hes an electrician by trade

that's a good trade to fall back on though isn't it?  I'm sure I read on here someone was thinking of training to be an electrician.  I genuinely hope things improve for you!
