Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cold/Dead Tail - Limber Tail - experiences

Well it seems my poor Maxy has Limber Tail - tail limply hanging down - does wag it but tentatively and generally letting it hang down.  It came on yesterday afternoon?  Although he was holding it a bit funny yesterday on our walk in the morning.

Reading up I think possibly it was the huge walk we did Saturday morning followed by the dip in the pond that day or Sunday?  When he sniffs his tail does this helicopter action?

Anyway it seems it will start to improve in a few days and by two weeks all be ok?  Is it worth getting anti-inflammatories or just let it improve.  Am lead walking him as it says rest?

Was going to prob. head to vets if no improvement in a few days.

Just wanted any first had experiences and any other tips if possible.

p.s. I probably wouldn't have know about this if it weren't for CD such an educational site - thank you!

Thanks for any advice.

Poor Maxy - they look so miserable with it, don't they?    Usually comes on after bathing or swimming - maybe a sort of 'whiplash' injury as they wag a wet tail.    We had it years ago with our old flatcoat, just after he'd been swimming.

Personally I'd just give him some arnica and possibly some apis, and keep him quiet for a few days.    It usually goes off by itself in about 3 -4 days.     But as with everything, if you're worried, go to your vets.    In my experience, few of them have heard of it!!!

Thanks I have some arnica so will give him some.  He looks so sorry for himself and I am missing his wag!

At the moment not too worried but if it doesn't improve will head to the vets but did read they have never heard of it!  Thought it was a lab thing until did my research and see it pretty much covers all the gundogs!

Thank you Jo

Thanks Teri - do you rest yours?  Is that the best thing to do - he wasn't happy being lead walked today!

A couple of years ago it happened to Hamish (Goldie) after a swim. It wasn't bothering him and after consulting the knowledgable lot on here I left it and in a couple of days his tail was back to it's waggy self.

Just a slight word of caution, Esme had similar symptoms just over a week ago, but she was really sorry for herself and seemed down, unable to settle. So I took her to the vets and he said she had an absess at the base of her tail (I couldn't see or feel anything). After a dose of Rimadyl and penicillin, the next day she was right as rain.

Thanks - at the moment he seems happy enough just looks a bit sorry for himself but eating well and settling down - in fact he was pretty put out not been able to gallop as usual this morning.

But will keep an eye over the next few days just to be sure.

my staff had it after going to the hydrotherapy pool but doesn't get it if she swims in the sea.  It was awful coz she looked so sad without her wag but it didn't bother her.

Hiya,

Yup Henry had it not long ago.  It corrected itself within about 24 hours.  I put a warm towel on the base of his tail to help.  not sure whether it did help or not but needed to feel like I was doing something for the poor lad.

Its a horrible sight to see but it does go so dont be too worried.
