Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hip X-Ray charges

Hi
I am wondering what the average cost of having a large breed hip x-rayed.  Has anyone had one recenctly. I know vets fees vary an awful lot but just trying to get a rough guide
- By mastifflover Date 10.09.08 15:39 UTC
Do you mean xrayed as in hip-scored or just xray?
My Mastiff had his hips, writs & elbows xrayed, in all there were 9 plates taken, he was about 5 months old at the time and weighed about 40kilos, this cost £210. BUT it was for diagnosis, not for hip-scoring.

I've just enquired re hip scoring for my gundog breed.  He weighs app 25kg but they didn't ask weight before quoting:

Vet fees £100, BVA fee £35.40

I recently had a 30k bitch hip and elbow scored under GA.  She was microchipped at the same time - bill was £220

Chontelle,
Vets fee's vary! the xray plate costs all the vets £1.00. I have mine done under sedation. As I feel anaesthetic is a very high risk for large breeds of dogs. Unless for surgery when there is no chose, I paid £75.00 For my last bitch.
I paid £17.50 each injection for my puppies being £35.00 complete, some vets charge £50.00 for one. I pay £20.00 for chipping. some pay a lot more.
I would check a number of vets.

As well as checking different vets for cost, I would check they are used to doing x rays for scoring, as some vets do not position the dogs well, so a vet I trust I would be willing to pay more for.

It is very important IMHO to use a vet who is experienced in taking Hip X rays for scoring. They may cost a little more, but you get what you pay for. the vet I use has never had any plates returned because of the quality(she will not submit plates she isn't happy with)& the plus side is she very accurate with her assessment of the score

I should have said: this is for sedation not GA and is a with a vet that comes highly recommended as someone with a lot of experience.  It was a little more than some of the others I phoned but worth the extra I'm told.

Ours was £250 but i did add a blood test as well to the Xray whilst he was out.

My 40kg Rottie had her hips xrayed (for diagnosis not scoring) and it was c £200 (about 18 months ago). My 38kg bitch had her front legs xrayed (again diagnosis intermitent limping) - 9 plates totalling c£600. Same vet, didn't ask whether we were insured (we were), and seemed surprised we thought the bill was a bit large as they "only charged for 7".

Edited to add...
Sorry gone off on a tangent, just re-read and realised it's Hip xrays, but it still grates......

Medium sized dog £135.00

35kg bitch under sedation = £76 hips only, £126 hips and elbows.

Use a vet that has come recommended if you can - some of the xrays I've had done over the years have been blinkin awful through inexperience of the vet!!

Gosh Air, where do you live?

Lady in hampshire where mine are done......£50.00 for her fee, which includes a sedation for the dog plus BVA fee.....excellent service....

Crikey, prices really do vary don't they................well I have now had my boys hips x-rayed, for diagnosis only as he is 12 1/2. They charged £160, the bill was considerly more than that, hence I thought I was being "ripped off". On seeing an itemised bill I now find out that I have already paid for an agreed  course of 4 Cartrophen injections (as he has quite bad arthritis in the hips). Also was sold a bottle of Synoquin for £76 (which I since returned and purchased off the net for £46 !!)
Thanks for everyones response and fingers crossed we see some signs of improvement.
P.S. The X-ray was done with a reversing sedative, not happy about G.A. specially in an older dog.

Hi everyone

I'm looking to get my girl hipscored come Oct/Nov and would prefer that she was done under sedation rather than GA.  Can anyone recommend a vet not too far from Hertfordshire.  Jennyb59, your vet sounds really good - my vet will only hipscore under GA and I'm not sure how many they do.  Shame I couldn't manage getting it done at the same time as you dogsababe :-)

"Gosh Air, where do you live?"
Not far from Banbury - in a village called Hook Norton. Do you know it?

They come recommended from the field trial people I mix with in the area and the vet in the practice who does the xrays undertakes probably 10-20 each month which is important to me.  She will also chat about the xrays and burn the plates to disk for a fiver - well worth it IMO.  The one thing that may be contentious with some breeders (I have no problem with it) is that she won't allow you to pull the xrays if they look bad - they take all your money before discussing the xrays to prevent folks from not submitting if they look dodgy.

Obviously the BVA fee is on top of the prices I quoted.

The lady in Hants did mine back in April, she charged £100 for her fees and then i think it was £75 or there abouts for the hip and elbows to be scored. The dog was sedated.

I had my labrador done today and got charged £160 including elbows
