Hi  Can anyone recommend a vet in the Surrey (Woking/Guildford) area who does hip scoring?  (If you know the rough cost for a large breed that'd be great too - but now i'm being lazy!)  Many thanks in advance.

I live further away from you and visited a lady in Eastleigh, Hants. She doesn't charge a huge amount as she sedates the dogs. Has a huge waiting list for this to be done, though does a lot of dogs on the days she does them.
Well worth getting your name down on.

If you do a search on this site under hip scoring, eastleigh you should get her details or i can PM them to you.

Can anyone recommend a good experienced vet for hip scoring in Co Durham, preferably one that x-rays under sedation.

Just thought I would add  this one for anyone who is near Cheshire...........

Euan Bryson   hamptonvets.ukvol.co.uk/

It might be of use for those looking in or around this area,

I would recommend him, lovely man, knows what he is doing and x rays under sedation.

Also looking for one in Scotland a reasonable distance from Kilmarnock, that will do under sedation.

I personally use John Dennis at Arrowfield Vet group, Kiington, Hereford.  Worth the fuel from Bristol.

My friends are getting quite fed up various vets telling them sedation isn't allowed when the Procedure notes quite clearly state it is!

"3.1 Protection of Personnel
The Guidance Notes for the Safe Use of Ionising Radiations in Veterinary Practice (1999) explain that only in EXCEPTIONAL circumstances should dogs be manually restrained for radiography. Since the radiography of dogs for the purposes of this Scheme would not constitute exceptional circumstances:
(a) it is NECESSARY to employ general anaesthesia, narcosis or deep sedation to enable only mechanical (ie nonmanual) restraint for the positioning of the animal;......"

Hi,

Sorry to hijack the post.

Why is it better to have these scores done under sedation?

Regards.

A GA adds considerably more to the not inconsiderable cost of putting a dog through the Hip scoring scheme, with anaesthetic around here it's £150 just for the GA.

There is also a theory that an anesthetised dog could have it's hips pulled out of normal alignment with poor handling, giving a less good score, where with Sedation there may be more natural resistance.
