Topic Dog Boards / Health / Anyone else had dgs with upset tummies??

Got back from my hols last week, and the dogs had been fine in kennels (as they always are, and I trust the kennels LOL)
Gave them dinner on friday and added a tin of Pedigree chum (Yes I know  but a customer gave it to me so thought I would use it up!!!) And as my dogs are used to chopping and changing they normally have cast iron stomachs.
Well Sat morning I woke to pooh all over my bedroom floor, Niether dog has EVER poohed in my room LOL
I thought it was just Beano but think t was both of them!!!
I starved them both on the Sat, then fed them the sunday, but by the monday, Beano was nearly back to normal, but Ebba was poohing liquid, and had Diorreah on my living room ffloor, very very watery, ::(
She was actually at one point poohing blood, but am sure it was irritation of her anal passage as she had been strainibg for so long.
Starved them both again Monday night (Beano still not A1 so thought t would be better for him)
Last night and tonight I have given them rice and fish.
My point LOL
Rang the kennels on monday and he said a couple of his dobes have had a bad stomach and cleared up. Another runner got back to get her dog from another kennels and her dog waas poorly for a few days.
So has anyone else had dogs wth dodgy stomachs????

Yep..... me !!! :-)
I ended up at the vets with all three of mine, stool samples in hand.......
Nothing found, but they all ended up on Metronidazole antibiotics for 10 days and are now completely fine....
I too have never had a dog mess in the house but I seemed to be coming home to it every day so after 3 days of first starving them and then chicken and rice I had had enough...
Still don't know what caused it, not been in kennels etc so am clueless.....

i got home this morning from a night shift and hubby told me he had been up all night with tess who had been vomitting all night, really bad episodes, the poor thing i had to throw my quilt away change all the beddding clean the carpets etc,, i have starved her today weel she had 2 charcole bisciuts which help firm up her pooh;s. by the evening she is great in herself drinking alittle water ang wanting to eat,, i really do not know what caused it,she does have a very sensitive tummy and the only thing i can put in down to is some tripe sticks, that she wont be having again, i feel so sorry for her because her treats are very limited but i cant have her feeling poorly,

Us too!  Started with one dog, who I managed to clear after starving, using Kaolin and Tree Barks powder, but it was a job to sort, then second dog started, hers cleared up pretty quick, but third dog at the moment, nothing is working, so am ringing vet's this morning.  Was at a show on Mon, and a dog there had an accident in the ring, like water, and owner said projectile vomiting - the vet said he has got gastro-enteritis, so there must be something going around.

Mine too!
Normally my boy has a good stomache but something upset him really bad last week and it took a good few days to clear up, I just did what the vets had told me in the past when my first dog use to get bad poos & I'd go in to panic mode calling the vets at stupid o'clock lol
They always told me to starve them for 24 hours then small portions of boiled chicken and rice untill they get "harder" which I've always done each time and it appears to work for my lot :)

Yep me twice both times up the vets Kaolin, antibiotics and £300 later got our down to pond weed, eith he would help himself or my OH pulled it out and then he helped himself!! been near any stagnant or still water?
- By katt [gb] Date 01.09.08 18:07 UTC
Yes he was squirting like no tomorrow (Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis) had him at the vets got meds. Was back today, he is not vomiting or squirting blood, just squirting now, vet said if he does not pick up by tomorrow morning or if he stops drinking to take him back asap as it's went on far to long.
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 01.09.08 18:48 UTC
One of mine too.If no better tomorrow, third day, was off to vet. But the last pile of vomit contained the fingers of a gardening glove.

I have never owned gardening gloves so I have no idea where he got the thing from!!
- By Lea Date 01.09.08 21:57 UTC
Well my 2 are ok now at long last :) :)
It went on for about a week. Not bad for a week I hasten to add!!! but it took a week for the stools to get back to normal LOL
Am pretty sure it was a stomach bug.
Thanks everyone and hope all of yours perk up quickly :) :)

My 8 month old BC has had upset tum now for 3 days the trouble is though he might have a few poos ok and then they are very runny.  He had me up at 3am this morning, needing to poo, When it was light i took a look and most of the poos  were normal but then one was very runny.  The same thing has happend today when i took him for his morning walk, he started with a firm poo and then was going at least 4 or 5 time's just runny poo the same has happened this afternoon when my family took him for a walk they said he was straining all the time. He is fine in himself. Have decided to feed him nothing from now on untill the morning.  Should i then give him the boiled rice and chicken?  I have not changed his food he has Burns and i am careful with treats mostly the doggy sauage which i get from the training class. I have only had him 6 weeks and when he came to me he did seem to get upset tum alot but i thought i had sorted it with giving him Burns rather thean the Bakers he was being feed from foster person and also i was feeding him Beta for a couple of weeks untill i did alot of reading on the different foods and thought a diet without the rubbish would be better for him. Though i have to say he has had a marrow bone but he gets at least 2 of those a week since i have had him and has always been ok. I know this sounds daft but i'm going to say it anyway if a bone has been left out in the garden for a few days and then they eat it could that give them upset tum with all the flies being on it? Could it be the water he drinks, he rarely drinks from his water bowl but drinks from the stream and any ditches that have water in them.

> i was feeding him Beta for a couple of weeks untill i did alot of reading on the different foods and thought a diet without the rubbish

My girl has lived 14 years on Beta and I have raised a couple of robustly healthy litters on it.  Rather than worry about want the "sages" on the internet tell you just find something that suits and stick to it.  You seem to have fed three different foods in 6 weeks if I have read correctly.  Unless he is showing signs of disagreeing with any of them I would just settle down to one or other.  This three day upset is unlikely to be his present diet if he has been ok so far on it.  A disagreement with the food would occur immediately. It is likely to be something he has picked at out side but these things happen all the time to dogs and they have a strong enough constitution to fight it off.  If it doesn't settle down after a short period of starvation and bland diet ie the chicken or fish and rice I would just let the vet check him over.

Hi  Sorry did not mean to upset anyone.  Your dogs have done great on Beta then good for you.

Your right i have tried 2 different foods since i have had him but i was not going to keep him on the Bakers which is what the foster person was giving him.  Also the Beta just did not suit him he was pooing at least 6 or 7 times aday and lose poo which i could not clean up.  Thats why i did research and thought i'd try Burns i will stick with it.  As he does like it.  Thanks for your thoughts and i shall just keep an eye on him.

ps.  I meant to say that i never gave him Bakers.  I have feed him on Beta and now Burns.

> I meant to say that i never gave him Bakers.

I presumed you had fed it at least during the change over.
- By mspoppy [gb] Date 14.09.08 17:18 UTC
Hi  Thats understandable i did not word it correctly.  I know it does not help keep changing their diets.

I am a worrier and its my fault not cleared up as i have not really starved him.  I thought it would clear up but he must have picked up a bug so i shall starve him now and see how it goes.

My friend's puppy had a bad one a few weeks back, ended up at the emergency vet but they said they were ok just starving him and then doing chicken & rice. Had some trouble reintroducing normal food (problem was probably triggered by changing food by mistake, picked up wrong stuff at supermarket) but they tell me he is fine again now.
- By mspoppy [gb] Date 15.09.08 08:53 UTC
hi

Sorry i know this seems another daft question but is it ok to change the flavour of the food your dog is eating eg he is on Burns Duck and potatoe but i would like to try the venison one.  Also not sure if Venison one would upset his tum as he does have a very sensitive tum.  After starving him his poo this morning was nomal but he did strain later with nothing coming out.  Also if say i did want to change his diet i have some samples of AG how do i go about it.  Or would it be best if i just carry on with the Burns, it just so confusing as what is best to do.

Sorry to hear your dog has been a bit off colour. It is a worry I can imagine. However:

1) In my opinion I would definitely not allow my dog to have a bone from the garden if it has been contaminated with flies. There could be all sorts of nasties spread on it.
2) I know dogs will drink water from anywhere, however water from ditches and canals etc would be stagnant and could contain giardia and lots of bacteria and potentially hazardous algae at this time of year especially, so I would try to discourage your dog from doing that. Again, just my personal opinion.
3) If a dog is being fed too much for their activity level. If it is more than what their body requires, this will result in a firm stool ending with loose stools. Also if you have switched your dog straight over to Burns from Beta rather than doing it gradually, again this could result in an upset tummy. My current pup was being fed Beta when I purchased him from the breeder and I wasn't too impressed with the ingredients, not to mention mine also had "loosish" stools on the Beta, so he was changed gradually over to Burns and then A/G when he was a bit older.

If you are now thinking of switching him over to A/G, then I would wait until his upset tummy has subsided and then very slowly over the space of at least 7 days incorporate the A/G into his meals.

I hope this helps. x

Hi Crazyblonde

Thanks it really does help as i have been stressing about it. think its mroe the straining rather than the runny poo as he seems to of been quite loose since i have had him.  he has been on burns duck and pototoes for 2 weeks and then i gave him the burns again but chicken and brown rice then as he did not seem to enjoy the chicken one i started mixing in just a tablespoon of Dennes and he loved that. I then just brought the duck and potoes again still mixing in the Dennes there did not seem to be any problems on that conbination. It was only from last thursday  when he started with the diorea but as i say some poos where ok others runny and the straining all the time.  He had been chewing a bone that had been left in the grden and as you say alot of flies had been on it.  Also talking to a doggy friend yesterday he said as it had been left out in the garden then rats or mice anything could of gone on it, we do have alot of rats around here.  Think i will stick to the combination that i listed above, and not leave any bones out in the garden again.  I am not sure if he is ok today as i have not seen him poo on his morning walk. Which is not like him so at least he is not straining.  I did not know wether to worm him or not i did mention to the vets if he should be wormed but they said as he was wormed the 15/07/08 with Drontal PWS then he would not need doing until October.  What are your thoughts do you feel i should worm him again i have looked and cannot see any worms in his poo.  He does seem total fine in himself.

Thanks you

Pauline

I would be careful changing even the flavour if you think they have delicate tummies - my friend once got the wrong flavour JWB delivered and thought it wouldn't make any difference, and she had a terrible mess to clear up in the middle of the night with 8 dogs!!!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.09.08 20:40 UTC
yes even a change in flavour can give them the runs !!!
lucydogs ,your poor friend she must of been cleaning for ages :( and the smell :( x
- By Cairnmania [gb] Date 17.09.08 21:13 UTC
Mspoppy,

If you are feeding your dog a marrow bone twice a week with the marrow left in the bone it could well be the cause of diarhea and tummy problems; with or without maggots :-)   Marrow is very high in fat and very rich and lots of dogs will end up with poo problems from eating to much of it at once.
- By mspoppy [gb] Date 18.09.08 15:03 UTC
Hi

Don't think it is the Marrow bone, as he is alot better now and i gave him a marrow bone on tuesday and he has been fine.  Feel it was a bug and hopefully now it has gone. Probley made worse because i should of starved him earlier, but as he does seem to have a sensitve tum i thought it would settle.  He is doing great on the AG.
