Well well well thought I'd ask if anyone had any idea's over the past fortnight or so I have varied my route with Sal, and often now see a couple with a nice GSD X they come out of their gate and set off I walk behind/in front dependant on the time I get there but they ony go about 400yds turn round and wal back and into the house. Tonight I asked them why sucha  short walk and they said the dog will not go any further and will not pass the bus stop so they do the "400 yard" walk about 6 times a day.....amazing anyone ever come across anything like this before.?

How strange.
Maybe the dog was frightened by something just past the bus stop as a puppy and has never got over the fear - only feeling safe untill he reaches that point?

It reminds me the story my Dad told me about his dads dog - it used to leave the house every day to walk by himself and meet my gramp off the bus, the dog would always be there bang on time - he got run over by the bus in the end :(

Our neighbour when I was a teenager had an OES that would walk about 100 yards then sat down and went no further, they had to drag it back home - thinking back i often wonder if she had bad hips and that was why she wouldn't go far but I think she was just stubborn and lazy really!

Would you not put it in the car and go and do a proper walk?

There are so many ways they could solve this problem but it sounds as if they might not want to.

They might not have a car :)

> They might not have a car :-)

I know - I may have been being facetious; but even so there are options.  Just who is taking whom for a walk!!

They may have reasons for not pushing him that they didn't go into. My dog only gets short walks due to Ed and I'm not to push him past his limits (allthough now I find I need to enforce the limits for his own good).

Yes. My dog was terrified of cars when he was young. Going down the high street wasn't an option. I had to stick to the small surface streets just around the house. It was slow going building his confidence and making it a little further as time went on. But, anyone watching would have seen me go to the end of our short street and turnaround - not understanding why it could have been interpreted as I couldn't be bothered to take him further.

And then, he hated the car even more. He was sick every time he got in so for some dogs car rides to walks aren't really desirable. ;-) We got to know our little block of houses very well!

My dog (Rough Collie) was scared of anything with wheels, moving or not.  He was 13 months old when I took him on and going anywhere was a complete nightmare as he hated walking past parked cars, prams, trolleys, bikes etc and as for getting in my car, he would virtually strangle himself to get away from it.  I spent ages walking short walks round the streets and sometimes he would take no amount of coaxing.  The neighbours thought I was odd as I would walk round our close twice as that was the simplest thing to do, there was a huge field at the top of our road!

Were ok now, he even jumps in the back of the car!
