Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / GSD Hip scores

Kai's hips have come back and he 3:7  Elbows are 0:0.

Now I am pretty happy his hips that but the breeder sounds pretty disappointed that they are uneven. Are they really that bad?

IMO they are good hips but I don't know anything about GSD hips. Even hips are better but I doubt your score would cause any problem.

I agree even hips are better, but the breed average is 19 so its still a good score.

If 19 is your breed average then your dogs score is good. Here is a link for the BVA sscores http://www.bva.co.uk/public/chs/Breed_Mean_Scores_-2008.pdf

You can appeal but IMO I don't think it is worth it. You could always ask your vet to explain the x-ray to you.

I'd be happy with that especially with your breeds mean score etc.

I'm not worried about appealing.  I am happy that they are low and under breed average, especially as we intend to compete in agility with him.  It's just I am not a breeder and as such appreciate feedback that is more knowledgeble than mine!  Thanks all.

here is the US comparison which will put things into perspective: http://www.offa.org/hipgrade.html

Even if Kai's hips were even and both 7 that would still be a good score for his breed, so I would be very happy :)

Sorry to slip off topic for a moment, but can I ask a question please?

On the OFA chart, can I assume that all scores are graded A1,A2 etc, but then do they also have bms for each breed, or just breed club reccomendations for what grades should be bred from?

Its a good score, but the breeder who I got abbie from would not lift the endorsement if her hips had more difference than 4.. ie 5,5 is ok but 1,7 isnt even though its a lower score...
I completely agree with her (luckily abbies hips were 3,3) but the very best breeders can be very strict with their line..
I have seen good GSD's being bred from good lines with higher hips than that so congrats :)

The OFA and the FCI his are graded.  so you would not breed from those graded dysplastic, but would aim for the best of the normal depending on what proportion of these were available to you.

In the individual statistics link on that page you can see what proportion of the breed are dysplastic and how many score excellent.

Really interesting re. the scores of a dog that is borderline.  They re-score that dog 6 months later and it says many are then given a fair grade.
