We have become the proud owners of a beautiful chocolate Standard girl who was 8 months old when we got her, nine months old now.  I have had Standards before and must admit to finding them a bit difficult to train but Skye takes the biscuit.

She is adorable but seemingly a few butties short of a picnic!  She is quite aloof, not particularly bothered about human company or contact so training with fuss and excited voices as we trained our Stafford just doesn't work, neither does food rewards as she is totally uninterested in food treats.  We have tried everything, even the smelly cheese that our Weimaraners would literally jump through hoops for!  She doesn't recognise her name and to be honest we are starting to wonder if she is deaf.

We live on a farm so after walking through the yard where the combines and tractors are working we let the dogs off their leads.  She knows the point where the lead is unclipped and will stop and wait for me to do so, tail wagging.  When we get back she again stops at the point where leads are put back on but shows no sign of hearing us if we call her.  She comes because the other dogs come and to an outsider would appear 'trained'.  She had never been on a lead before we got her but walks well on it and stands beautifully to be groomed.  After a month of training at least twice a day (10 minute periods) would you think we should see something?  She won't even sit!  She has a hair clip in at the moment so I can see her eyes, thinking that eye contact will have some impact, but it appears not.

Skye being untrained is not an issue at the moment as she follows the other dogs, but I really need to get her to come on command, wait, etc for safety if nothing else.  Any ideas?

Must admit I wondered about her hearing too? How does she react to noises? Have you discussed this with your vet?

Have you tried using hand signals and rewards rather than vocal commands?

If you suspect that she is deaf, have you had her assessed for this? It would seem like the best place to start.

hi there , is she getting some one to one with you with none of the other dogs insight? i kind of made the mistake of when i got my pointer always taking my older weim everywhere the three of us and as you say to  the eye he looked well trained but it was my weim who was trained and he just copied.it wasnt until my weim wasnt well and we were out on our own i realised how untrained he was and how much he rubber eared me. it was embarrassing to say the least. needless to say training had to commence.
