Hi there, does anyone know how I can find out about getting my dogs tattooed? I struggled finding anything on the internet, so was hoping someone could point me in the right direction?

Cheers

National Dog Tattoo Register hold a database of people who do the tattooing, so you need to contact them. Will have a google for the number.

That's great thank you, I knew I'd seen something but couldn't find it!!
- By furriefriends Date 12.09.08 15:09 UTC
general question what are the advantages of tattooing over micro chip ?
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.09.08 15:19 UTC
Before the anti tattooing people post, the advantage is the scanner required to read a tattoo is free & most people have @ least one if not two ie they are visible ;-)
- By furriefriends Date 12.09.08 15:23 UTC
Well I have learned something already the only time I have looked at ear tatoos they have been so blurred that I couldnt see the piont. Didnt relise that a scanner is used.
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.09.08 15:31 UTC
No you have missed the point you only need your eyes to read a tattoo, none of the tattooes I have done have been blurred. Also not all ear tattooes are done by the NDTR-hunts, lurcher breeder, racing greyhounds all have their own tattooes & tattooists
- By furriefriends Date 12.09.08 15:42 UTC
Right got it now there was a story involved with the particular dog I am thinking of which could account it being blurred. This was a gsd that we nearly had. Thanks moonmaiden
- By furriefriends Date 12.09.08 15:43 UTC
Just re read you post I really am stupid got the joke now you can all laugh !!
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.09.08 15:57 UTC
ROFLMAO

Seriously most"blurred"tattooes are actual in uncleaned ears-you would be surprised at the amount of wax & muck that can be cleaned off a dogs ear flap !

I go for both tattoo and microchip. :-) Tattoo is a permanent identification - if in the ear easily visible (apart from when the ruddy tattooist hasn't done it properly  ) - and so I have been told proof of ownership. The microchip is also permanent - but can migrate or fail - and is the only acceptable identification for Pet Passport and I think various KC schemes like KCAB. It is also on the whole the first one that vets etc will go for checking for if they find a lost dog\ cat. I go in for belt and braces. :-D

How on earth do you get a dog (or pup) to sit still long enough to be tattooed? and does it hurt?
- By Karen1 Date 12.09.08 16:35 UTC Edited 12.09.08 16:38 UTC
Its nothing like a human tattoo.

It takes seconds and it hurt all my dogs although all done as older pups or adults.

Since the first time I check with my vet and give them painkillers before they have it done. It still hurts a lot but they recover from the pain quickly (within minutes). The first time without painkillers they were in pain for about 40 minutes to an hour.

Edit to add my dogs have tattoo, microchip and ID tags when outside the house.

You have a brilliant assistant like I have who holds the dogs/puppies & gets them to relax

It only takes seconds to do the tattoo most of my time is spent applying the ink !

40 Minutes ???? I don't know who does your dogs/puppies, but the dogs I have done recover straight away. Pinkillers shouldn't be necessary @ all

I held my own dog (pup) for it - he squealed but it only took a few seconds, and there were no residual effects whatsoever. Only hurt at the actual time it was done. I would guess the sensation is similar to ear piercing....

My adult bitch sat and wagged her tail while she was tattooed - the pups from both her litters squealed for the 5 seconds or so it was being done then completely forgot about it the moment they were put down on the floor again.

Same here munrogirl - except that I go belt, braces and garters too LOL!  Mine are chipped, tattooed and overtagged - each has tags saying that they are neutered (River isn't yet but I'm hoping it would be a deterrant to thieves as she is very pretty so marketable for pups), their breed, name, my name, address, two phone numbers and the dobes both have tags saying that they need daily meds and what they need them for.  They also have silencers so it doesn't sound like christmas when they run ;-)

All the tattooes are legible - so long as the ears are clean they should always be clear.  I also trim Opi's ear fur a little to make sure, but it isn't really necessary.  River is the only one that hasn't been done yet but she will be next month.

Where do you get them\ what are they? I also have tags with NDTR no and to say they are chipped and address and tel no... but the jangling drives me mad. And the tags go on safety collars which are worn in the house - so they come undone if they get caught on something but if a dog gets out it is identified. ;-)

Two of mine are chipped and tattooed, when they were tattooed by their breeders no problem at all not bothered when you handled the ears when done or a few days later. hope this is of some help :)

Their tags are actually military style dog tags for people, the silencers came with them.  I did try looking for silencers for normal tags but I couldn't find any!  I got the tags on ebay, 5 lines of 15 characters for each tag so I could just about fit everything on!

I deliberately put two tags on my dogs collars so that they do jangle so I can here where the little blighters are if they go out of sight.

What would you clean the ear tattoo with?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.09.08 20:26 UTC
Surgical Spirit
