i had the single most awful and embaressing thing happen to me last night

i went to agility training, did half a class with one then changed for another, then got daizy out to go in and say hello as she hasnt been to the training barn before, well she was awful barking and lunging like i have never seen her do before!!! and this was when no dogs were running as the class had finished!!

the worst bit was she barked so much i took her out again, as we walked out a friend (selena) walked out aswell down to her car, daizy was going nuts at her dog, who ignored her completely, then all of a sudden selena shouts OWWWWW! daizy only nipped her leg!!!! i was obviously mortified she had done it, shes left a nice bruise aswell, selena was luckily all ok about it, but never the less i feel awful!!

im trying to work out where i have gone wrong, she is maybe too socialised?? she is a very bolshy girl and not afraid of anything, she plays very rough with her mum and with terra and kipper the cat, so much so i have started seperating them after a short play, but this rough behaviour HAS to stop
she was on the lead at the time, which does seem to make it worse.

anyone who doesnt know her, she is 6 months old now, and is a pup i kept from a litter, i also have 6 other dogs ( none have ever had this problem!)
she is very keen to learn, but also very stubborn, moody and can quite honestly live up to her gender  !! we go to a training class once a week so far since she had her vacc,
she is relativley obedient, knows all the basics, ( failed her bronze good cits when the dog next to her said hello! grrr)

we have recall issues at the moment, but ive put down to teenage rebellion, she also herds and nips her mum, but only her mum, who takes so much before putting her in her place! this behaviour is getting less and less, but the barking at others is seeming to replace that!

she has barked like this at other dogs ( not just a passing wuff, a full on bark while pulling towards them) on 2 other occasions, once on a walk, a black staffy that was frisky with terra, she hated, and again while at class there was a hyper westie, that would go nuts at her, she started to bark back towards the end of the course ! not making excuses, just thinking of possibilities!!

any suggestions would be great,

I think that:

a) you should tell her off for barking and lunging on the lead. Not scream or shout but say "ah-ah" and quick gentle jerks of the lead. Get her to sit and face (maybe) the dogs and get her to act how you want her to. Nicely!

b) it seems like you have met far to many horrid dogs recently! I've had exactly the same problem with my 6 month old (one which I kept from my bitches litter) so much so he went up to dogs ready to defend himself. Its taken quite a few dog shows and LOTS of nice dogs to make him think that not everyone wants to pin him to the ground! Now he's a very friendly fellow. He also went to training and met dogs on walks but just did not meet enough nice dogs.

Keep up the socialisation, if anything intensify it. Control her behaviour and try your best to rectify it, you do not want her like this for the rest of her life!

Hi, was reading your post with interest - not sure what sort of dog you have but mine is a male 8 month old westie who is quite dominant aggressive. I also have a 3 year old male westie who is as soft as butter and i have never had any problems with. They both get on really well. HOWEVER my younger westie has always lunged and barked at other dogs and i have been trying to improve since he was a pup. I started the 'nothing in life is free' method (loads of stuff on the internet about this) and he certainly has improved loads - especially in the house. When we are walking around the neighbourhood is is much better with dogs that he knows - BUT if we meet a dog he hasn't seen before - then i still get the lunging and barking. I have been using the positive associatation techniques here (treating when he sits and is good) or just walking straight on if he lunges. We still have a long way to go!!
