Topic Other Boards / Foo / Police message: not sure if genuine?
- By Stormy [gb] Date 12.09.08 07:56 UTC
Hi guys,

Have any of you had to following message distributed at work? I have no idea if it is a spoof or not, so if it turns out to be please don't shoot the messenger!! See below.

Dear All

If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that he or she is a company engineer, or telling that they're checking your mobile line, and you have to press #90 or #09 or any other number, end this call immediately without pressing any numbers.

There is a fraud company using a device that once you press #90 or #09 they can access your 'SIM' card and make calls at your expense.
Forward this message to as many colleagues, relatives and friends as you can, to stop it.

Many thanks for your time regarding this matter, take care and regards.

I personally am grateful to hear all these stories. yes i understand some of them arent true but if it makes us more alert of surroundings or smelling a rat then its a good thing.
Once upon a time i would have believed these scam artists but now i know not to.
Great example, My grandad answered his door the other day and 2 men told him he had some slates missing from his roof. Before they could do anything or say anything my grandad said "thank you for telling me and shut the door" He was afraid these men were going to try and get past him and into the house or offer to fix them and scarper with money without fixing it. Why was my grandad so on the ball despite being in his 80's and frail?.......because he's heard of these scams and now airs on the side of caution, for which myself and my family are grateful

Ive had warnings about that type of scam before too Stormy...apparently it is real so dont do it,put the phone down straight away.

I agree FredsMum, these type of messages can make us more aware, however some are purely meant to scare people.  I remember reading the one about a guy geting into the back of a womans car & when caught he said he was part of a cult & the initiation was to bring a woman for all the men to enjoy!! This really scared me even though it was proven to be completely made up!!

I had a phone call ,the gent  seemed quite believable. He asked a few questions, He was calling on behalf of (cant say can I), well he may have black horse hair on his jacket! I do bank with them, so yes it could be ok. Because I have received various warning emails, a bell rang in my head. He said could he ask a few details about you & MR ? He needed to conduct a survey which would take about 5 minutes. First needed these  details. DOB etc..I asked him to  give me a number and I would call him back or to send the information by mail. First  he got a bit officious then line went dead. MMMM
If it is genuine the bank can write to me.

I have to use about four different passwords or combinatian of numbers before I can access my banking details.  I should be able to insist on the same from my bank !

So even if these warnings are not genuine they do make us all a little bit more aware don't they, and there is usually an element of truth in them.

I agree just makes us more aware. If anyone rings and ask who they are talking to I always reply why! who do you want. If they are not sure I put the phone down.
A couple of years ago I had a telephone call saying it was the local police station Sergent********
saying they were investigating local collectors for cancer research. Asked all my personal details, like a fool, was caught out at 9oclock of an evening and gave them. On checking the local police, they had not made on such call.
So now I give no details over the phone. They should all have pass words if they want to discuss any think over the phone, and prove who they are!!!.

That's strange. I received an email this week from said bank asking me to click on the link included to update my details. I do not bank with them so deleted it

Plenty of these going around, phising scams - best to delete them or forward them onto the alledged bank & they sometimes investigate!! I seem to get at least 1 a day of these & just report them via hotmail.

I do agree, even if these warnings we receive are not true, then at least we are aware that things like this do actually happen, and innocent folk do actually get scammed! So it does make you think twice, definatly!
