i have ten week old westie pup. very lively, but with a touch of colitis. tended to clear up with panacur (wormer) aqnd fresh cooked chicken/boiled rice, scrambled egg/water based food for a week or so. mow colitis has returned. any help before i see vet next week would be appreciated. i would like to move her back to dry food if possible and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about brand etc. from the breeder i tried butchers tripe/ ped chum puppy complete. also have adult version of james beloved turkry and rice kibble got from vet which i had intended to slowly switch to before colitis returned. have seen naturediet lite here on old topic boards and wanted to know if it still existed asnd do i need a vets prescription for it. any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi
My pup  had colitis too at 10 weeks when I got him. After the antibiotic, worming, probiotic route, not to mention boiled chick and rice, it finally cleared up with Naturediet :-D

It worked within 2 or 3 feeds and for the first time he had lovely formed poos with no blood or mucus. Vet also told me that pups that have had upset tums shouldn't have wholly dry food for quite a while - it should always be soaked!

Try naturediet and hopefully you will see a difference quickly :) You can buy online or in most pet shops and at P@H

No prescription needed!

As westies do have a lot of allergies in general, I would put your pup on a hypoallergenic food such as burns puppy food, anything that is red meet and gluten/wheat free.  Keep away from the big brand stuff as it tends to go straight through dogs.  Feed puppy food until the dog is 6 months, and certainly don't give a developing dog a light diet which is for older/fatter dogs.

Thats odd and goes against the advice that I have been given. For westies most vets and animal nutritionists say stay well clear of red meat for westies and stick with white meats, fish, chicken, turkey etc. Unless they have an allergy to that food substance or have been proven to be fine on the red meat.

manxbhoy Stick with simple ingredients that have good quality proteins in with NO artificial colouring, preservatives or additives. Also stay well clear of foods that have meat and animal derivatives as sometimes manufactures will not tell you what exactly is in the meat and animal derivatives, it is no good for dogs with sensitivites, Foods like Soya, barley, yeast etc can be problems.

Naturediet is not a vet prescribed food so no need for a prescription. You can purchase it Direct from naturediet or from places like pets at home, it is one of the best on the market with no artificial colouring, preservatives or additives and has a good quality and high meat content in it.

Personaly Pedigree dog Food is not a good food.
If you check the ingredients say for example:

Pedigree Puppy Pouch Dog Food Turkey and Rice Pouch:
Meat and Animal Derivatives (Including Min. 4% Turkey), Cereals (Min. 4% Cooked Rice), Oils and Fats, Derivatives Of Vegetable Origin, Vegetable Protein Extracts, Minerals.

Then check it against:

Naturediet fish and rice:
Fish (Min. 60%), Potato 5%, , Brown Rice5%, , Vegetables 5%, Natural Ground Bone, Kelp, Herbs (Rosemary and Rubbed Sage), Omega 3 and 6 (Flax, Fish Oil and Meat), Vitamins and Minerals, Vitamin A 1250iu/kg, Vitamin D3 150iu/kg, Vitamin E 20mg/kg.

You can see what one is better quality :)

hi thanks for the tips. have decided to try naturediet puppy for now. it comes in 390g pouches. how many per day should i feed a young westie pup. have ordered 54 pouches online so far. if it doesnt work will try burns puppy food. really looking for a good branded dry food alternative in the long term.

I was feeding 1 third of a pack divided into 3 meals per day at that age - gradually increasing it as he got older. Eventually he was having half a tray then he went off the puppy version and was having 3 quarters of the adult type. For small dogs it says half to 1 pack a day on the adult trays - can't remember the puppy version but it was 1 third to 1 half for my pups weight.
