My daughters 3 year old golden retriever has suddenly started chewing. When left alone he has started chewing the door frames. He has never done this before seems strange to me. Anyone with any ideas as to why he should start now and how to deal with it.
Chewing could mean his teeth hurt him and a trip to the vet may be needed.
Otherwise chewing is usually a sign of boredom. Before leaving a dog in the house for any length of time it is good to ware them out first, take them out for an intensive walk so they sleep while you are gone.
This should work, especially for a moderate energy dog such as a Golden Retriever.
However if this doesn't work, you could provide the dog with an activity ball which has treats in that the dog has to push around to get the treats out.
Or you could just provide a raw hide chew to keep him occupied.
Failing this, it may be the case that chewing the door frames is a habit and there are smelly things that you can put on the door frame to deter the dog from chewing them.

Buddy is always walked before being left and his normal routine has worked up untill now. His teeth are sparkly white and no apparent problems there. The only thing different is that my daughter had to attend a business meeting out of town and had to stay overnight and he was left with her husband. He walked Buddy and followed there normal routine. Due to her promotion there are likely to be more meetings, if this is the reason for his behaviour do you think he will get over it?
vick vapourub is your answer to deter the chewing of wood now before it becomes a habit
