hi, i have looked at the forums quite a lot since getting our new english setter pup and have found loads of great info and advice. so i now have a query. I take full blame for this but think pup will be okay! I took him out on a lovely lead walk through some woods and knew by the time he'd gotten back to car that we'd walked a little too far. a a 10 min car journey home and another 10 minute wait for his dinner to be ready he happily scoffed the lot before going out into garden to do his business. (he's doing really well at wanting to be clean!) unfortunately he was a little too excited and enrgetic and i think when he finally flopped in bed it caused him to be sick, twice (thank god for vet bed!) do i still give him his supper? he's 14 weeks old and we are in the process of slowly cutting down and out this (milky) meal. do i give him a smaller portion of soaked biscuit instead? he's currently sleeping!!
many thanx!
hi starmutly at 14weeks he dont need a milky meal ! or fully soaked food ,but you shouldnt feed a dog 1 hour before walks and a hour after thats why he was sick , id just give him a small amount of food because hes still young and will be very hugrey ,as he gets older he could gte twisted guts if he eats to close when going walks , if he as eaten something out walking you need to make sure he get plenty of fluids but it dont sound like thats the problem !!

thanx for your advice white lilly
I do understand about the time between feeds and exercise i was just trying to fit it all in with the children's clubs!! For once I don't think he managed to eat anything on route, far too many interesting smells around! I shall re think that route as it was longer than i anticipated. I'm just hoping this was a learning curve and no major harm done. At the moment he is still flaked out on his bed, should be up soon i hope as i need mine!!
thanx again xx
Hi Welcome to the wonderful world of english Setters! To be honest I would say a 10 min walk is more than enough for a pup of that age, please don't be tempted to overwalk a little pup. Get the kids palying out in the garden with him !! I would say no walks at last 1 hour either of food. Good luck
hi there I would add one thing ....Ialways let my pup rest in a room Or crate for an hour before and after food.....Free play just before or after meals can be just as dangerous in some breeds ...Not just a walk ...

Same here, (but my 'pup' is 14 months old now) rest time before & after food, which can be a bit tricky as he likes to try to have a loopy 5 mins after eating his evening meal. Also I stop him drinking large amounts of water before & after exercise (including heavy play).

hi all,
loads of comments, thanx! well our four legged friend seems to have made a full recovery! he has also started puppy training classes and certainly keeps my husband on his toes! Although i have to say he is a quick learner (the dog, not my husband!) and had almost got the hang of 'fetch' out in the garden and definitely knows when a treat is in order! i love the way he comes in after a play to settle down but sits and stares at the treat tin first!
happy walkies!
lol :) very clever doggy ,he will keep you all on your toes ;) x
