12 week old puppy, bred ourselves, no change in routine/diet,
Watery diarrhea last night followed by massive amount of vomited up food. Shivering and shaking after so took her to emergency vet. He couldn't find anything really wrong, not particularly sore in her tummy, very slightly raised temp. Told us to give her lectade and starve for 24 hours then introduce chicken/rice.
She is bright between long sleeping periods but still passing sloppy stools (can't believe there's anything left). Should i feed her if she is still loose? How long can I not feed her for poor little mite is growing weak! She's about 10kg or she was.

10kg for 12 wk pup sounds averagely good to me. adult cats average about 5kg.
what breed is your pup?

Hi, her weight is fine it whether I should feed her due to the diarrhea?
She's a GWP and definitely not for sale! (ie not advertising LOL)

I would be concerned that she was getting enough liquid the food is not important, the vet should be able to give you packet of graduals containing salts that you dissolved in water and give the pup on an hourly basis, that will keep her ok for at couple of days. If this is not possible then cook skinned chicken breasts with lots of water and liquidise, serve a spoonful at a time every hour of so.

Try natural bio yoghurt also.

Thank you, that is what the lectade is and she has drunk 2 pints since 10pm yesterday as well as just boiled water.
The vet said give her chicken and rice but should I do it tonight/ we've just been for a little walk with her and she weed a lot but no more poo.

How bad is the weather near you just now? Are you near farm land? If she is drinking the water that has been washed off the fields then I think she would have the runs! She is drinking all the muck that has been put on the fields. If you are in town then obviously this won't be the case, but there will still be a lot of unsavoury things in the puddles/streams just now due to the rain.

Try her with a little chicken if you think she is hungry, but I tend to starve them for 24 hours before starting food again. That way her poor tummy gets a chance to recover.

Thank you LindyLou, we have our own land but it is fairly wet and she was drinking the water that had run off the roof. I don't think it's dirty but could well have washed something off into her. She does like to eat the sheep/horse poo though we keep her away as best we can...oh and snails! Vet said it's really important to keep on top of the worming if they eat snails but she was wormed only 10 days ago so he thinks she should be ok.
It is 24 hours now and I have just tried her with a bit of chicken and rice which she wolfed. Bless her!

Ah sounds like she is on the mend now

Sorry yes, missed the  lectade, would go very slowly on the solids too start with, a desert spoon at a time and give a about 3 hours between, then increase the amount very slowly if all seems well.

snails and slungs are known to cause lung worm, so best to stay away, not sure about horse poo or sheep poo but i know fox poo is also a trigger for lung worm.....

Im sure its not that, and I hope she is better soon!!

I had a pup with exact same symptoms. Turned out she had bad dose of worms even tho she had been regulary wormed by the breeder and myself at once we received her. She would be extremely lively, sleep for long periods, mess with her food, and i thought i would never get a solid poo. Once we cleared the worms up properly (and it did take a while) she recovered completely.  She is still regulary wormed with Milbemax

Thanks for your reply. Ours is always hungry, doesn't mess with her food so not quite the same.
I did ask the vet whether it could be worms but he thought as she had just had the correct dose of Drontal 10 days before she shouldn't be wormy. I will ask him again when I ring tomorrow. I will look into the milbemax too..haven't heard of that one.
We do obviously try to keep her away from slugs and snails as well as horse and sheep poo but she is a tinker for diving under the hedges in the garden especially as it has been so wet. We are taking her out on her lead at the moment to minimise the risk.
Started her on chicken and rice last night. All well, clean and dry through the night, went out for a wee at 6.30am. Gave her the same for breakfast and she did an almost hard poo followed by a sloppy (not watery) one. Now I don't know whether to starve her again or continue with the chicken and rice.

if it was me id still give her very small amounts and plenty of water ,sounds like its neally out her now x

It will take a while for her gut to recover, so a normal(ish) poo followed by a runny one is quite normal. Don't try starving her though now as she needs the food in her tummy for her guts to work properly. It's been empty so things will go through a bit quicker than normal for a day or two.

Can you see I've been there myself with my lot ;-)

just a thought - did she have her 12 wk vaccination just before she became ill?  it may be poss reaction to this if she had??  I would try and keep her indoors for a day or so and keep feeding her skinless chicken breast until she is completely better.   One of my girls had a really bad reaction to her 1st vaccination at 8 weeks and we had to rush her back to the vets within 4 hours - she couldn't stand, was shaking, upset tum and wouldn't eat but thankfully recovered after a day - the vet charged us another £50 to tell us she had a bad reaction to this vaccine that he had given her 4 hours earlier!! from now on we wait until the pups are over 9 weeks old for their 1st vaccine.
