my rottie has been shaking her head on and off for months.
ive taken her to the vet and theyve given her drops for the ears saying there is a build up of wax.she absolutly hates her ear drops and knows when the time comes to be treated.shes not nasty with it at all but i feel for her as shes started to shake her ears again and i know theyre hurting her because shes scratching as softly as she can.does anyone think there could be a bigger problem?something the vet is over seeing if you know what i mean.shes been back and fourth 3 times now.everytime the drops run out shes ok for about a month if not a bit more but then she gets it again.someone mentioned to me about a really deep ear infection.what can i say to my vet to make him look deeper into the problem.
my poor girl is such a lovely dog and loves her ears being scratched(like most dogs i suppose)but i have to ask people not to touch her ears incase they hurt her by mistake and of course i get the IS SHE DANGEROUS look and she really isnt.

Sorry to hear about your girl.

From my experience with ears it could a number of things!

Does the ear smell?  Is it hot and red to touch?  Can you see any discharge from the ear or any sign of black grainy type things? Is it the only symptom she has i.e no loose stools or anything else?

Might be worth trying colloidal silver, I found that it clears ear problems really quickly and they don't seem to come back either.  Quite a gentle and effective product.

shes been bk to see the vet which i am now considering changing after 10 years!

I don't rate Thornit at all myself although many swear by it.  The only thing that stopped my youngest male from getting ear infections was changing him to a partial BARF diet.  He has wonderful ears now and hardly ever, if ever has problems.  Bit of a change for 4 years of going back and forth to the vet and in the last year since changing his diet I've never been back since.

I think whilst you can treat the ear with different things, you really need to find out the cause of it.

Hot and pinker than usual ears which are free from wax and/or debris does sometimes mean and allergy of some sort.  The ear becomes inflamed and hot to touch and uncomfortable for the dog which leads them to shake the head, rub face on carpet etc. 

I can only imagine that they must be intensly itchy for the dog and make them feel pretty yucky. 

Maybe you should look to what you are feeding her and perhaps try and do an elimination diet??  Just a thought.  It may help to narrow the cause down.

Garlic juice is good, crush a garlic clove, leave it in an egg cup with a cotton wool bud in it to soak up the juice then clean the ear with it, also the homeopathic remedy Hepar Sulph 30c available from Dorwest Herbs Ltd, they have garlic juice too.

As someone else said, Thornit power too, once it's cleared up, is useful, from Ebay.

I had this problem with my boxer girl, she got a bad infection and it was a nightmare to touch them, shes normally a sweetie but she had to be muzzled so the vet could look inside them!

Anyways we got some special drops, cleared up, thought great all sorted now..........then it came back, same again, drops, cleared, came back.
What I realised was I needed to do was to keep them clean all the time, so every week I clean them with a baby wipe and if I see any signs coming back I use a normal ear cleaner and quickly give them a clean and touch wood we've been ok since :)

hi there ive tried changing her diet,as i did wonder about the food she was eating,i feed all my dogs BARF now,best i can.i feed raw chicken and bone minced and turkey necks some wings if i can get them,id love to change her completly to carcus but i cant get it.since the day i bought my first puppy(11 years ago )id always weekly clean their ears and teeth with tooth brush lol.
my dogs coats glisten as do their temprements,but as someone said about the boxer,she too needed muzzle for the vet who she otherwise loves meeting......strangly lol.im going to chat with vet tommorrow as im not happy with her feeling like this thanx all.x

Cleaning to often could be a problem?  I have to admit I rarely ever do anything with my dogs ears.  Lydia's have been cleaned out about 10 times if that in her 15 years and she's only had an ear infection twice in all those years.

Carmen, Lana and Lastar I've hardly ever touched their ears and they've had no problems.
