As the weather is so filthy and we're all feeling a bit down in our house, I decided to make us all a treat we haven't had since going Gluten-Free  -  DOUGHNUTS!!!! :-D :-D :-D

This is a VERY BIG DEAL for me as it meant putting lots of oil (an inch!) in my WOK and FRYING them in batches.  I don't do frying!

They were then tossed in sugar.   Absolutely scrummy!  Some of the bigger ones (11/2 inches) were a little gooey in the middle but who cares?  It's been about 8 years since I had a doughnut!

MMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm!

Off to buy a doughnut maker now from Argos :-D

Get me a breadmaker while you're there :) I have been asking for one as a pressie since last year but it has fallen on deaf ears so far!

Mom has tried to make GF donuts before.  That was an interesting experience. lol

She was so happy though, when one turned out perfect, and she finally could have a donut without being sick.

Its so hard, to do a GF diet, but when youre new at it (and she was at the time) all the little things (like donuts) are just amazing.  She thought she would never have one again!

Now, she goes to a wonderful bakery for GF products, and gets her donuts there.  But she still makes all her bread (who wouldnt, with the nasty GF bread they sell in stores for almost $8 a loaf!) and I absolutely love the smell.

Props to you for making your donuts!!!!! (Im scared of frying things too, I hate using oils, and especially the deep fryer for chips!)

Well,

I bought the doughnut maker, and it has made 3 batches of doughnuts :-)   They aren't bad :-D but not a patch on the ones I made in the fryer, they were superb - the real deal!   I think it's more a case of tweaking the recipe and getting it right.

Little-Un loved the chocolate chip doughnuts I made tho :-D

I'm wondering what else I can cook in it ?   pity it only has the ring doughnut shapes, I could do spring rolls and dim sum if it had the round ones LOL

I used this recipe for them but added a little more liquid and made a thick batter which I dropped into an inch of hot oil - they were the most like the real thing :-D  I used Doves Farm gluten free flour tho as it was for all the family :-D

Dill that webiste is fantastic!  I had no idea you could have GF food on prescription, I've printed off all the info & requested a starter pack for my dad, he was only moaning about the cost of GF bread the other day.  Hope his dietician & doctor will be supportive.  Thanks!

Glad to help :-)

If he's just been diagnosed then he should be getting cards to send off to different companies from his dietician so he can try different foods (full size samples)  the one we got from Schar was like a refugee pack LOL   His dietician may also have samples to give him.

He's been diagnosed for about a year now but he's also having cut out lots of other foods & every time he goes back to the dietician they give him even more food he can't eat, it's quite disheartening for him!  I hope he'll ask them about this next time he visits! The GF stuff in Tesco & Sainsburys is so expensive!! Good that it's becoming more readily available though..

If he's a coeliac then he needs to avoid Gluten, this basically means any food with Barley/Rye/Wheat gluten in.  Most labels these day do tell you if it's safe ;)

Some people also have to avoid wheat starch and malt - again reading labels is the way to go.  Has he had any info from the Coeliac Society?

Loads of info about Coeliac Disease and living here http://www.coeliac.co.uk/

Unfortunately some coeliacs also have to avoid Lactose and this is where it starts getting more complicated ;)

I know what you mean about being disheartened, my son is a coeliac, but also has other medical problems affecting his diet.   When we first started trying to sort him out shopping and cooking for him was a nightmare.
