Hello all,
I'm a new puppy owner, our family has just given a home to a beautiful 10 week old Golden Retriever girl.
I was just wondering at what age I can start giving her cheese and/or cooked liver or other meats for treats? I don't want to upset her stomach so so far she only her her James Wellbeloved Puppy food (that we got from the breeder) and Feelwells Puppy treats.

When you say treats, I assume you are talking about treats for training her. I would start off with frankfurters cut into small pieces, they only need a tiny bit as a training treat and they shouldn't upset her tummy.

Thank you for your suggestion, I will try this! Yes, I meant meat or cheese for training treats. I read somewhere that bits of cooked liver is supposed to be good, but I don't know what age I can start this?

Meat can be given from as soon as they can take solid food, I feed my dogs a raw diet so they are used to meat from a young age. I would avoid cheese as it has a lot of salt in it plus can get messy in the pocket. Cooked liver is good as it holds it shape and dogs love the smell makes it ideal for training. As your pup is young you may want to cut it up small as he/she probably doesnt have the teeth to rip bits of easily.

I give my lab puppy cooked liver also as a training treat as soon as she reached 8 weeks (when her littermates had gone to their new homes) I also feed James wellbeloved and it has been fine.

You could make liver cake or cheese cake, tends to be less rich than pure liver or cheese. Here's the recipe I use but don't weigh anything and just tend to chuck it together so apologies if yours doesn't come out brilliantly on first try :-).
240g cheese grated or 1 packet supermarket liver
4 eggs
2 heaped tablespoons flour (I use dove farms wheat and gluten free self raising)
a cup of water if necessary to make a thick but pourable consistency
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Pour into a baking tray lined with either baking paper or a teflon sheet. Bake at approx 6 gas for about half hour. Where possible, I wait until the cake is really cool before cutting up.

Another one my dog loves and much cheaper to make than commercial treats:
1 tin mackarel in oil ( they are quite small tins)
1 egg
1/2 tsp garlic powder (the granules kind of thing you use for cooking)
plain flour (I find selfraising flour makes them very crumbly like cake and this is messy in your pocket. Plain flour makes the 'cake' firmer).
I just put an egg in a bowl and whisk it up with a fork, add the fish with the oil and flake it in small bits and pieces with the fork (as small as I manage), add the garlic (optional, but I think it makes it more smelly which means yummy in a dog's brain), then I add enough flour to make it a sticky dough. Spread it about 1-2 cm thick on baking paper and bake it for about 10-15 min (180 degrees). Then I let it cool and take sharp kitchen scissors and cut it into small cubes. I put it in a bag in the freezer and take out whatever I need.
