Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pups Eyes Still Not Open after 14 Days
- By wendy [gb] Date 05.09.08 10:31 UTC
I have a litter of 5 pups and they are 15 days old now.  All of the pups except one girl have opened their eyes (only yesterday).  Can an experienced breeder advise if they would bathe her eyes or would you wait another day or so?  This is only my 2nd litter and the previous litter of 9 had their eyes open a bit earlier than this.

Don't bathe their eyes. They will open. Each litter is different. I have had some at 10 days others 16 days. Once one starts the rest generally follow within 24-72 hours.

Thanks for your help.  I will wait for her to open them in her own time.  (it's prob best as she will then be able to see how huge the bags under our eyes are!)

No its such a short time to have them with you and I am already dreading the day that they go to their new home's (potential! new owners visiting next weekend).  This time we bought a 'Summer 4" screen baby monitor/listener and even have it on whilst sleeping in the same room as mum and pups with one eye open half the night, it has been absolutely the best buy ever! can even cook tea!! hubbie pleased about that, if he cooks it is usually a takeway!!

Much the same experience here.  I had a litter of 7 where the first opened on day 13, a couple on 14, and so on.  I wouldn't bathe the eyes, but I was a bit worried that one hadn't opened his eyes and I had an appointment to take him to the vet on day 17.  Took him out of the whelping box ready to go, and he blinked rapidly, opened his eyes as if to say "Gotcha!"
