Can anybody recommend a good kennel in the south essex area
as we have to find one for our mini dachshund because of a family wedding

Not a kennel but what about trying National Association of Registered Petsitters. We are NARP petsitters and we know some of the ones around here, infact our dogs go to one when we are away. You should be able to meet the petsitter at their home. They are also fully insured. I am very picky about where our dogs would go and i am very happy for them to be looked after by the guy we use. You will need to decide for yourself that the person you choose will suit you and your dog's needs but i think this would be a good place to start. We've had many a happy guest lazing on the sofa or in the garden with our dogs. You would be surprised how quickly they settle in! Good luck!
