Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / House training - really frustrated!
- By Dill [gb] Date 01.09.08 18:30 UTC
Pup is now 5 months (tomorrow) and if the day is dry totally housetrained - on Saturday, a dry day, we had to leave her and the others (not all together ;) ) to go out and were later back than anticipated so about 5 hours instead of 4.   I put papers down by the back door and she had waited till we got home.  I let them all out and she weed for Britain straight away, big fuss and loads of treats :-D  She has also been dry overnight for weeks in her crate.

Today, it's raining again, she has weed by the back door twice, once in her crate and once in the kitchen - personally I think she's taking the p*** :-(

I have taken her out regularly and she has weed on coming inside :(   so now she's out in the back porch with the door open (I hardly close it except when we go out anyway) as I am so annoyed I feel it's best to leave her to it for now.

Oh and the oldest girl who is a nightmare for not going in the rain has now decided that she can wee inside too if pup can - luckily not all the time tho :( :(

Am cleaning it up with Bio washing liquid and vinegar

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any ideas I haven't tried?   it's difficult to leave her out and watch as the garden is L shaped and I can only see part of it :(

I can't offer any advice Dill, but just wanted to let you know your not alone.

:(
Know just how you feel..................
My girl now 6months is unreliable, and that is bowels too.
My theory is that as her 'accidents' are always (99%) in the back door/porch area where it is mainly glazed she thinks it is part of 'outside'! That it is far enough to go if raining As it is also mainly open unless we go out.
At 6 months it is still improving to the point I do think we are now almost there.
The joys of terriers!!!!

Karen ;)

I personally think leaving the back door open is a bad idea, it all becomes one area then and they don't differetiate between indoors and outdoors.  I always go out with youngsters and put it on cue so that I know that each time they go out they can empty and then you can be there to reward every time.  I have only just stopped going outside every time with my youngster and she has been with me for 6 months, she came to me at five months with a fairly engrained going in the house habit.  I carried on going out with her for over a month after I thought she had got it :-)

ive trained mine to go when i say .....do it ..... i would take them out and stay with them so when i see them doing it lol i would say it over and over again ! and give lots of fuss and treats and now i can take the dogs on to the garden say do it and thay do :)

>ive trained mine to go when i say ....

This is the annoying part.  The two oldest ones are trained to 'be quick!'  and will perform wherever we are.  The problem has arisen since the days and days of unremitting rain - about 5-6 weeks of solid rain.

The pup too goes out with me into the garden and is learning 'be quick' usually she performs very quickly.  But after the recent spell of appalling weather she seems to have gone backwards :( today she has gone into the garden with me (she won't go out on her own in the rain anyway) and after waiting 10 minutes or so I bring her in (I learned with 'granny' that staying out any longer is pointless) and every time today she has gone seconds after coming inside.  when she went in her crate I had carried her in and put her in the crate in desperation.  Yesterday she went outside with me and did the biz every time despite intermittant rain, but today it hasn't stopped at all.

I left them in the back porch with an open door because I was feeling frustrated with them and it'll do them no good if I'm in a strop.

Have any of you tried making the rain fun? My pup HATED the rain when I first got her... she would literally cower down if we went outside and it was raining. We have spent the last few weeks (of summer!!!) making the rain fun... ie playing outside and generally being silly with her so she doesn't think that the rain just means a toilet and then run back inside. The more fuss you make of it raining (coats, umbrellas etc ) the more the pup will think it is somethign horrible to be avoided! Admittedly it means we have gone through many changes of clothes and have a very muddy house... but atleast no accidents! She now goes running outside when it's raining just to play... crazy girl. Not sure what you all think, but it worked for me.

My little girl is seven months old now and it has been a real slog with her as she was bred at home and was obviously taught to "do it" inside for the first few weeks. She is fine when we are downstairs, I too leave the back door open, but if we are upstairs she does make mistakes. Sometimes the little sod jumps into the bath and does it there. I suppose that is preferable to the bedroom carpet. I suppose it can only be my fault for not keeping an eye on the clock while I am busy doing something else. I am sure the advice to take them out regularly and make a big fuss of positive behaviour is the key. As for the rain, she absolutely loves it. One of her littermates came to visit recently and they spent two hours running out of one door into the garden and then in the other door. They were absolutely soaked but very happy!!

My pup does this too.
He's 12 weeks old and normally dry day and night but he will just not go in th rain. On wednesday we stood outside for 40mins and he weed on the carpets as we walked through the door.

On Saturday I bought a big tarpulin and rigged it up in the corner of the garden and he has been happily going to the toilet under this. He doesn't seem to mind the rain, he's been playing outside this morning, just weeing when it's wet.

Hi,

No absolutely it won't do any good if your in a strop so best to leave them to it like you say :-).  When I said about leaving the back door open I was just going on what you had written and offering suggestions, you said that it's hardly ever shut unless you go out, unless I misinterpreted that then I think that may be at least part of your problem :-)

If she doesn't like the rain, my young girl hates it with a passion then maybe pop a coat on her. Mine won't wee in the garden in the rain unless she's got hers on because she doesn't relax and has her tail too far tucked between her legs to be able to wee :-D

If she goes when she comes back in from being outside then maybe try popping in and out, staying with her so you can watch her and be there take back out if she appears to be about to go on one of the indoor stints then you can be on hand withy the goodies.

Unfortunately many Bedlingtons hate the rain, and mine certainly do.  There's no convincing them it's fun they just stand there on 3 legs looking pathetic.  Even going for a walk is a bind on a rainy day, they lag behind and one even cries   let them off lead and they just make straight for home

OH bought a gazebo thing that covers the whole garden, they won't go underneath in the rain - they don't like the sound of the raindrops on it :(  neighbours think we've lost the plot LOL

As for taking them out and waiting, I limit times to 10 mins max these days.  With the oldest bitch I was so determined to get her going outside I ended up staying out in the garden with her for 3 hours   and she still weed just inside the door :(  After that I just chucked her out and hung out of the bathroom window waiting for her to go and didn't let her in until she'd been.

Today madam has been much better, we had some dry weather earlier and she was going outside ok, now we've just let her out and watched from the bathroom window again.  Standing in the bath peering out of the window is a real pain, but we're not giving in LOL

Hmmm. I have a bitch that will be 4 in October. She will not go outside if the grass is wet, or if it is raining :-( Yet if I put her lead on and take her out the front door (my dogs don't get in the front garden at all) she is happy enough to go then. Maybe this could be a way out for you? Make her think she is going for a walk, even if it just round the garden she isn't used to, or to an area she can go that is off your property?
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 02.09.08 18:32 UTC
My three year old setter will still pee in the house if the back door is shut in the evening. She never does it during the night, just around 8 or 9pm. She will bark at almost anything, but not to get out - nutty dog!

> Standing in the bath peering out of the window is a real pain, but we're not giving in LOL

  I totally mis-read that Dill to say "Standing in the bath peeing out of the window ...."  Conjured up quite a picture, the shame :-D
- By Dill [gb] Date 02.09.08 21:03 UTC
LOL when the weather's cold that isn't too far from the truth Teri

>Make her think she is going for a walk, even if it just round the garden she isn't used to, or to an area she can go that is off your property

Gah! they all hide when the leads come out and it's raining!  It's quite funny really, they hide their heads as if to say "no dogs here!"  at least it would be if it wasn't such a pain :(
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 03.09.08 11:33 UTC
Is it an option to create a "covered area" so pup isnt put off by the rain. I.e putting up a gazebo so there is a dry area outside to encourage pup to wee in without getting soaking wet?
- By Dill [gb] Date 03.09.08 22:46 UTC

I'm fairly creative, we've tried most things over the years with the oldest one.  The only thing that works with her is to let her out (force her) and watch her thru the windows.  This entails running from the living room to the bathroom and back and jumping in and out of the bath to peer thru that window

I'm trying to give the pup more successes than failures.  I can't live with another stubborn dog I'll go nuts!

Today - torrential showers inbetween normal rain.  Pup gets put out and watched like a hawk, click and then treat as I let her in and playing and madness for a while.   At least she's getting the idea that it's best to get back in quickly :-D
