Does anyone have any experience of running a pet show? My local authority are thinking of doing this as part of a fun day and i would like some pro's and con's please :) They thought it might be better to only allow under 11's and their pets...i thought if open to everyone the whole place might be swamped with dogs...then anyone with a small furry could find themselves in a predicament ;)

Any advice/info welcome

Many thanks

I guess you mean a companion dog show, if so read this link

It tells you all the basics, have helped organise them in the past.  You should allow under 11's as they are the ones most likely to enter, we worked on a first come first served basis and allow no more than 15 dogs per class and in some of the pedigree classes we didnt fill the class.

Good luck

Just run it as a small furry show - or do classes for hamsters, rats, mice, rabbits, guineas, of each gender... adn then a couple of dog classes but do small furries in the morning and dogs in the afternoon... and er.... no cats lol!

WE were at a local small agricultural show tody which had a pet class (limited to children "owners" only).  There was an entry of 30+, with a lot of dogs, quite a few rats, guinea pigs, hamsters etc., some rabbits and even a duck (it got 4th place).  No fighting, all the rodents looked very relaxed in cages (or hamster balls!!).  Everyone sat around the ring on straw bales, and the kids were brought up to the judge by a ring steward one at a time (with attendant parent if needed).  It went off like clockwork, and was great fun.  No cats present, though, but there was nothing to say they could not be entered.

IT jsut sat on it's owner lap, loking quite unworried, and was carried into the ring, where the jduge had a quick cuddle too!  Obviously a very confident duck.  No idea what breed, but it was a biggish black duck, very attractive.
