- By viki [gb] Date 22.10.02 12:13 UTC
hi ,have a 9 month old cane corso, louis, who suffers terribly with wind.he has had a runny bum pretty much from day one,and has had allsorts from the vet, latest being tylan.i feed him on the science diet (large breed puppy) and also 2lb a day of either cooked lamb or chicken.i try to keep his diet very plain, not a lot of treats, because of this problem, but he does have a lot of rawhide bones,as he needs to chew constantly.does anyone know what would settle this problem,as it is constantly smelly in my house,i wake up at night, thinking im choking, and is obviously uncomfortable for my pup.any ideas,or proven remedies would be gratefully recieved!!

Just stick to the complete diet, don't add extras like chicken & lamb, the diet will be far to high in protien. Move your pup onto a good quality adult diet and nothing else.

hi vicki
just being nosey --what does a cane corso look like ?
as to the food ,he really doesn't need the extra protein that will be going straight through him and 2lb is an awfull lot
has he always been on the science diet ? it may just not agree with him
there is an earlier thread about dog foods and who feeds what -I will try and find it and come back here with it
I wouldn't think the hide chews would effect him
Liz :)

sorry couldn't find it !

just had a look at the photos of cane corso how sad that so many have cropped ears .what on earth is the reason for this barbarity
- By Yappy [gb] Date 27.11.02 22:29 UTC
do you crop their ears?
- By Leigh [gb] Date 22.10.02 14:12 UTC
Hey, Tradel .. isn't the advice from members here good enough then? ;-)

Vannessa, I agree with Jackie. You are bumping the protein up by adding extra meat to the complete. Try not adding it and see what happens :-)

Hi
I agree with Jackie.
But you might like to try some *Live natural yoghurt* mixed in with his food as this is very good for upset tums, and in my experience the dogs love it. :D

Yea, yoghurts fine so is water but cut the protien. Jackie

One of my Beardies couldn't have too many rawhide chews as they gave her awful dire rear, can't you try tough kongs stuffed instead. You never know it might help

My Black & Tan Terrier loves her Kong to be filled with Peanut Butter, keeps her amused for ages.

hi ,thanks to everyone for your advice, went and bought some live yoghurt this evening, will try that tonight, understand what everyone saying about too much protien, only trouble is he wont eat the dry food dry,any other ideas? ps he is up to weight,7 half stone and rising! pps, louis doesn't have clipped ears,i agree its barbaric, and purely cosmetic.

Hi, maybe you could take "the middle way" for a short while, cut the amount of meat you feed to 1lb straight away - I'd give only chicken not beef , and then gradually reduce it over the 10 days or so , so that he just has about 8oz a day and try and cut it down to just a taste in each meal. I always aim to underfeed slightly if a dog has tummy problems, especially if they are in good condition to start with - it gives their tummy less work to do. In the meantime cut out the rawhide chews and give really big almost meatless sawn not chopped beef leg bones to chew on, if he has to chew something then I think these would best. Carry on with the plain yoghurt daily and see also if he likes charcoal biscuits - they are excellent for windyness and when a dog is "loose" it at least makes life a little more bearable for the owner!! Or you can buy "food quality" charcoal from the chemist and sprinkle that on his food. Start with a teaspoon on each meal. You could try giving a well cooked plain scrambled egg in one meal every other day, this can help check uncomplicated looseness. I would also consider giving pro biotics once hopefully his looseness has diminished a little. Leave 2 or 3 days inbetween when introducing these new foods/ingedients.

I find lamb in any form upsets my goldens and my pup is also on science plan large puppy and won't eat it plain, I add a little tuna, sardine or pilchard, a little goes a long way, flavour wise and the oils are good for the coat. However I too have the problem of a windy puppy!

Viki
Try mixing the yoghurt in with the dry food so it coats every biscuit, I bet he'll eat it all then! ;)

Hi Nicky,
Mine like liver whizzed in a food processor with garlic and veg then stuffed in the kong and frozen, lasts them for ages
Anne
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 22.10.02 20:28 UTC
Liver is not to good for a dog with gut rot! If your dog does not like the food you are giving him then change it - he would be better coming off puppy anyway, put him on Active Adult. Try several different brands, as he has a tummy problem, I think a change may be in order anyway. Ja:)kie

They are beautiful dogs, how do they get along with other dogs? You could try adding a little warm water on his food its always worked for mine.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 23.10.02 12:39 UTC
Hot water will encourage the dog to eat, but does it help with lose stools and wind. If so I'll try it on myself.
Ja:)kie

Mine can tell the difference between Bisto and Bisto with mince on his meal. :D No need to guess which one he won't eat :D :D :D

hi everyone, sorry been on hols,so just catching up. thanks so much for all your advice, the charcol sounds like a good idea, and ive finally managed to encourage louis to eat his food plain.in answer to the lady who asked 'does he get on with other dogs',answer is yes he loves other dogs but for some reason most of them dont like him, resulting in them attacking him.he is left with a couple of small scars from these incidents, and now tends to keep himself to himself, for fear of being bitten.i know he is a large dog ,but he is gentle as a lamb, and as soppy as a lab!anyone know of an anti attack spray !!!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 08.11.02 08:04 UTC
Viki, it may be that he eyeballs other dogs and they attack. Some breeds do this, Akita's come to mind, but there are others and most breeds dislike it, others take it as a challenge. Mine do. Ja:)kie
- By Cava14Una Date 08.11.02 18:55 UTC
My Boxers would stare at other dogs and the other dogs didn't like it,so combine with snuffly breathing which could sound like growling they could upset other dogs, I was always saying stop staring to them

It may just be his size that sets other dogs off. The same happens to wolfhounds sometimes, but luckily they usually react like Lewis and don't retaliate. I missed this thread earlier, and I'm glad he's now eating his food plain. If he ever goes off it again a little tinned cat food (the sort in gravy) with complete food works well. A little goes a long way if its thoroughly mixed, and so it doesn't add much to the protein content while it does wonders for the popularity of dry food :-). Its also good for a dog that isn't well - even when they won't eat anything else, cat food usually goes down a treat.

hi everyone, what a day ivehad.took louis for his usual morning gallop, walking along, there was a burnt out car in the woods, before i could call him louis was investigating, resulting in two lacerations to his footfrom broken glass.rushed him to vets where he had sedation and a general, many stitches, and to top it off ,because ofthe amount of generalshes had already, they decided to bring his castration date forward, and kill two birds with one stone.as you can imagine ,louis is feeling extremely sorry for himself, and doesn't know which end to lick! i've taken day off to nurse him,but all hes doing is sleeping. trying to get some fluids inside him,but lifting eight stone to his water trough is beyond a joke. oh well, saying goes'if mohammad won't go to the mountain............'
- By SpeedsMum [gb] Date 28.11.02 19:16 UTC
My Dane cross gets the same reaction from other dogs, even though he's a gentle soul. Doesn't matter how he approaches them, most run a mile! Might be his size, but he does stare also so that probably has something to do with it..
