Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch with no appetite

My bitch just whelped 3 days ago, after the last puppy had come out she was back to normal, running around, chasing the ball, appetite was monstrous. However, today she seemed very disinterested with any food offered her from dog food to beef. I heard that bitches loose their appetite after birth, I'm just curious why mine had hers for two days after and suddenly lost it on the third day? Has anyone experienced this? I'm just getting worried that she might lose her milk production because of this. Thanks in advance!

How is she otherwise? If she is showing any other symptoms (ie she is lethargic or otherwise she is restless or over excited) then I would get her to a vet quickly, otherwise a morning is not a long time, give her a bit longer and see if she comes round. She is not likely to lose her milk in a few hours but you don't want it to carry on too long.

Thanks Fleetgold, she is at least still her normal self , active but not restless, could it be that she is just too caring for her pups that eating is just second to her at this time?

Mine wasn't to into her food I took some and put warm water over it and and put it in front of her while she was feeding her babies. She just never wanted to leave them. She was back to normal and eating her food (hard) on her own.

I agree. I always soak my bitches dry food, to make it easier to eat, as their mouths can become sore from all the birth and waste fluids they are cleaning up. I always feed them in the whelping box, as otherwise they would not leave the pups to feed.

In my experience the first few days my bitches would not be acting normally (running around playing!) they would be in the whelping box, and very intent on the pups, and would need to be almost forcibly removed to go to the toilet.

If she is running around all excited and has now gone quiet I would worry ablout eclmpsia!

Has she had a wild look in her eyes, and been staring into space, mor carrying pups around?

I agree, running around chasing balls is not the usual, after having a litter of pups,My bitch whelped last Thursday, she is still on Chicken and rice, glucose drink, still not ready for her normal diet at the moment.

Thanks to all of you who gave very good input, at least I can sleep soundly tonight, I'll observe her again and try feeding her in the whelping box.

Hi Jordan, it is terribly important that you make sure her fluid level is kept up - she needs water to make milk! I always feed my bitches in the whelping box, and have water with glucose added available at all times, plus drinks of goats milk as well (between meals) Usually find that appetites can be tempted with chicken, sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce!

just gave my bitch some sardines in tomato sauce...and hey, she loved it, looks like her appetite is back, and she's drinking a lot, I'll try the chicken on her next meal...Thank you all!
