Topic Dog Boards / Health / Westie Puppy not pooping regularly

Hi There
My Westie male has stopped his usual regular trips outside to poop, he is 13 weeks and despite having his usual meals, he won't go as often and when he does he produces a lot, and as he's not going after his meals he is going in his crate overnight!
He is a little off his food (Hills Science Plan) and so today I've mixed in a little wet food (also Hills) which he enjoys.

Please help, is this common, I'm aware that between 13 and 26 weeks he can get a bit fussy about his food, however I thought once he's eaten he'd still go to the toilet as often. He is alos a little bloated in the time between his trips.

Example: This morning he had gone in his cage (a lot but solid), I fed him at 08:30, then again at 3 pm with some treats at 12pm and he's still not gone at 4:30pm, he does howver pass a lot of wind

See I have an 18 week old male Westie and he is the opposite - he poos alot which is sometimes quite loose and he also passes a lot of wind which is very smelly.

Mine is a little off his food and not himself at the mo but think it might be down to him teething and losing his teeth.

We're off to the vet for his monthly worming on Sunday and going to get him checked out with the vet if his mood hasn't picked up.

Sorry couldn't have been more help.

Well...

I have a 21 week old Bedlington pup.  She is still fed 4 times a day as she's happy on that and as I'm there it's no trouble, it also helps with training.  She poos 2 times a day and has since she was about 12 weeks.  It's predictable and easy to clean up ;)   Haven't seen any fussyness yet.  She is teething and her gums look a bit sore.

IMO if a dog is windy and smelly or bloated then their food isn't agreeing with them.   You don't say what food your dogs are on, but it could be the food.  Or it could be the treats, some dog treats are full of sugars, colours and flavourings.  If you are adding the treats onto the pups normal ration that could cause tummy troubles too ;)

Mine is on  JWB mixed with Harringtons (1/2 and 1/2) with a little Bio yoghurt occasionally or some raw green tripe/raw minced chicken (about a dessert spoonful) replacing some of the normal ration occasionally.   All treats come from the food ration, or the ration is reduced if cheese or sausage is used as a treat ;)

Hope this gives you some ideas

Most of our pups have been fed four meals a day until about 12-14 weeks depending on growth/size etc. Then 3 meals a day until 6 months at least, longer if required. It sounds as if he could be getting too much in one go, and taking a long time to digest it, hense the bloating and not going regularly. He is probably seeming off his food because he is not hungry after large meals as dry food can sit in the gut for a long time. Try and split his daily amount into 3/4 smaller meals at regular intervals, and possibly up the meat a bit if he's being picky.
Good luck and let us know how you get on
