Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bee stings!!

My poor tiny pup was in the garden this morning having a good sniff about the grass and shrubs when she got stung by a bee right on the centre of her bottom lip!  She is a very teeny toy (13wks=just over 800g) and went wobbly and drowsy so of course I totally lost all sense of calm!  My partner managed to get the sting out and gave her a teeny bit of piriton and then we were straight up to the vets for steroids.  She's fine now, just very sleepy and has a wee mark where the barb went in an out!

All of this following on from one of my much older and bigger girls (who should really know better having been stung before) getting stung on the lip on sunday after munching a bee!

Apart from Piriton and a short trip to the vets for steroids (where necessary) what do other people do - I've been told vinegar reduces the sting/swelling?

Vinegar works for VASP stings, for Bees you use Bi-carb. (easiest way to remember which way round :-) )

Never take the sting out with your finger nails or tweezers, you will simply squeeze any poison that may be left in the sting, into the wound. You should use something like a credit card to scrape the sting away. This also applies to humans who get stung.
