Hi my 10wk old puppy has got the runs quite bad, she's been to the vets today for her 1st jab and although i did mention this he gave her a full check over and weighed her and says she is doing really well.Whats the best quickest remedy to clear up the runs ? I am feeding her royal canin with the occasional bit of chicken (boiled) scrambled egg and rice, she has been on this for weeks so its not change of food,OMG every morning i get up its just pools of runs.

First change vets NO vet should vaccinate a animal if it has the runs. The animal should be 100% healthy to be vaccinated.

Give your puppy just boiled chicken and rice small amounts through the day do not over load pups tum, slowly increase the amount over three days. You a can also give a probiotic and pro-kolin. You can purchase both online or from your vets.
If all fine then slowly add normal dog food and lower the amount of chicken and rice over the next three days until fully on normal dog food, remember do not over feed as this can cause upset tums.
If this does not clear up within 3 days or if the pup stops eating and drinking go straight to a vet as pups go down hill far to quickly.

I hope little one feels a lot better soon :)

Hi. I would try feeding your dry food mixed with rice. I have found that both egg and chicken can cause the runs in pups. If you find that this is a bit plain and she won't eat it then I have heard other people suggesting mixing in a bit of butter or gravy. Just keep it nice and plain (but make sure she will eat it) and then be patient for a couple of days. Make sure you make a decision and stick to it. As said already, if there isn't an improvement or she stops drinking water/loses her spark then I would go back to your vet. I have mentioned in a previous post that Feelwells probiotic puppy treats worked for my girl... might be worth a shot. Good luck!!

Hi dogue,

I am surprised that your vet vaccinated a pup with a health problem - vaccinations should only ever be given to healthy animals.

Is the food you are giving her what she had been fed by her breeder?  Has she been like this since you brought her home?  Are all bowel motions "pools of runs"?

Your puppy's first danger here is dehydration - ensure she always has plenty of fresh drinking water available.  It may be best to ask your vet for some elctrolyte sachets which are added to water.  I'd also recommend that you have your vet re-examine her as prolonged tummy upsets must have a cause which needs to be identified.

As to what to feed, I'd drop the dry kibble immediately - again for reasons of dehydration.  Instead feed some steamed white fish for a couple of days, small portions only.  If this improves the situation then add some over cooked white rice or alternatively thoroughly cooked, mashed and unsalted potato to the fish.  If this works for her continue this way for a few days before VERY gradually reintroducing small quantities of the diet you wish her to be on daily.

Please however get her back to your vet rather than let this drag on - young pups can go downhill very quickly.

Update when you can :)
best wishes, Teri

I have just been through this with my pup, so i know how a worrying it can be, there just so little. (well actually my pups huge but you know what I mean.)

We have just about managed to sort it now with a diet of chicken and rice, kaolin and antibiotics.

I hope your little girl feels better soon
