My Sharpei is 19mths old and has just started taking an interest in females. He has been quite happy to walk/play with my sisters 10mth Doberman bitch, but just recently will not leave her alone, constantly trying to mount her and so they have to be kept apart. I am now concerned that when we are out this will happen to other dogs we come across. He is not aggressive or dominant. Is it his age and could he grow out of it? My vet has said he needs to be castrated now, but after reading your comments, I am not so sure, I don't want him to loose his personality. I have heard about sprays/tablets etc. Any advice?

Are you certain that your sister's Dobe isn't coming into season soon? That could be the major problem right there --esp. if he hasn't done this behavior to any other dog.
If he's learned to mount and is doing it for aggression/dominance reasons, neutering is no guarantee that this will stop now that he's started.

I don't know who told you that, but it's bull ;-) At 19 months your dogs personalities/character is already developed. You are having him castrated not a total character assassination done
As for the mounting, have you let him know that this is not acceptable behaviour?

If a dog is castrated as a pup, you will not know his full developed personaltity. As this particular dog is now 2 years old I dont see the problem, surely you do not buy a male if you do not understand and are prepared to accept the male persona. Jackie
