Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dropping Coat Again

One of my boys threw his coat at the start of the year, he was spectacularly bald at Crufts but I was thinking that he would be in good coat for the summer shows. He has only just come back into full coat and is now blowing it all over again.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Should I have him checked by the vet?

Thanks.

Most Norwegian elkhounds seem to have been doing the same thing for months :-)  Several elkie owners I've spoken to said theirs have been the same as mine.  I think it's more to do with the weather - hot, cold, hot, cold - the Nordic breeds at least don't seem to know what season it is.  Although the moulting has been nigh on continuous, in the case of mine, they have not shed everything right out, so at least they've been showable.  The last full moult my oldest elkhound male had was a couple of years ago.

Have you tried Yumega?  heard good reports about it?  not used it myself as yet.

Thanks both. Yes, I did try Yumega earlier in the year but it didn't help and I have been adding Keepers mix but he is still casting!!!

I've got an Akita who started losing her coat just before Crufts, thought she was getting her coat back a month or so ago but its still coming out in clumps!  I'm hoping to show her again later this year.

In my experience, if a coat wants to come out - it will. Lotions & potions can only delay the inevitable. A lot of dogs at the moment seem to be losing coat, mine included, which is unusual for this time of year so it is possibly climate related. I can understand though, how frustrating it must be in a heavy coated breed in the middle of the show season.

one of my newfs has this problem so i was wondering if any newf owners have tried yumaga and if so what were the results.
Is it any good?

Hi,
Have you got a Sammie?
Well! yes, this year has been a nightmare, The bitches have blown it more and not just after there season. My mainman has been dreadfull, never has it sheaded like this year.
I put it down to the mixed weather very hot days then cold nights. I don't think they know what is happening.
I just make sure I get it all out.
Or there could be skin problems and I'm not chancing that.
I would not worry as long as they are in good health.

Ditto,

My Sibe always blows around Crufts March time and then thats it for the year however ..this year.. just last week he started his little sprigs of tufts sprouting out again!
My hoover is cowering in the corner wheezing and rocking back and forth ;)

Thanks.Yes he is a Samoyed and he is certainly a healthy lad.  I think you're probably right abbout the strange weather, I always imagine the worst!! Most of my bunch are in various stages of undress now.
