Has anyone used the CSJ lamb and rice, or the Skinners duck and rice.  Any opinions good or bad on either.  I'm undecided on which to use.  Normally feed skinners maintenance but want to try something wheat free.
Thanks
C.

I'm going to be honest, in my opinion none of those foods add up to the wonders Burns complete food has done for my dogs. It is wheat free, easily digested and my dogs look very shiny and healthy on it.

you can buy it from very few dog suppliers or purchase it on the website (but that is alot more expensive) I usually pay 17.00 for one big bag of burns.

best to try it

Whoa (or however it's spelt), where on earth do you buy your big bag of Burns for £17?!!!  I've actually just switched from Burns to AG 'cause of their recent price hike and fact I can get AG breeder bags, but my local supplier the cheapest they can do is £70 for 2 bags collected, so that's £35 for a 15kg bag.  You must be getting a 7.5kg bag, surely?  If not I need to know where you get such brill value big Burns bags!!  ... I really would prefer to have stuck with Burns.

Sorry original poster, I know nowt about Skinners and not used CSJ lamb and rice.  I know plenty of people who do use CSJ and are happy with it - obedience and agility folk - but not sure whether any of them use lamb and rice.

I've been feeding Skinners now for a good while, my personal opinion is it suits my dogs and they do well on it, therefore it's the best for my needs and my dogs..

Every one will have a personal opinion about what the best food is, what suits one dog won't suit the next dog.

Doesn't matter if its £35.00 a bag or £15.00 a bag, if it don't suit it don't suit.

One observation I would make, all the expensive foods have expensive brochures and expensive advertising campaigns, are you paying for promotion rather then quality ingredients?
- By clio1 [gb] Date 17.08.08 10:20 UTC
The reason I'm looking at CSJ/Skinners is that I can't justify spending £35.00 plus for a sack of dog food.  I have Labs and luckily they will eat most things put in front of them, (sometimes things not put in front of them!)  I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for that statement,  but the way prices are rising at the moment, the familys food and welfare come first.  My dogs are ok on cheaper foods, one of them is sometimes a bit loose and itchy, so I thought next bag of food, I would try something without wheat gluton to see if it helps.

Well I don't really know where you buy your burns food from but I pay 17.00 for a 15kg bag
- By cavalierz [gb] Date 17.08.08 11:24 UTC
oh yer you can get it in berkhamsted pet shop in hertfordshire. I don't know if that is a bit far from where you are

No way, 15kg Burns for £17?  It's got to be knock of, surely!!!  Sadly pet shop is 250 miles south of me, but will bear in mind next time I'm travelling south, I'll hire a big lorry!! :-)

Clio1 - you don't say how many labs you have, but it might be worth bearing in mind that Burns recommend feeding a lower rate than most other manufacturers.  In my dogs case, that worked very nicely. If you take this into account then Burns can work out quite a bit less to feed than some other manufacturers with similar priced bags, and even some of the CSJ range with lower priced food.

Get some samples from CSJ if you're considering them, ring them and chat to Ceri Rundle, you'll find her very helpful.  Meanwile, I'm going to research a move to Berkhampstead ... I'd really like to be able to keep my doggies on Burns!

I know! Burns doesn't float my boat but even I know that's silly money. Even wholesale I see it for £37. I wonder what their deal is. They must have an inside man! LOL

Ehh ! burns for £17.00 perhaps the guy ought to go into uk deliveries at the price even wih p&p we would be quids in.

I used to use chappie and gather that the police still do at least around here, does anyone else use it and what are current opinions it is very competitive.  I am talking about complete not the tins ?

> police still do

We have it on our buying system under 'food for strays' but also have JWB on the system for our dogs ;)

15 kg bag or 7.5kg? that's a bargain:)
- By belgian bonkers Date 17.08.08 16:00 UTC
I use Skinners field and trial salmon and rice.  Good food with decent enough ingredients, but I do find I'm having to feed more than with previous food, so don't know whether it's more economical in the long run!
- By cavalierz [gb] Date 17.08.08 17:35 UTC
Yes it is a bargain. Because I always buy burns from that particular shop I never knew that in other wholesalers/pet shops would be selling it for 35! i really am lucky lol

I have just switched to CSJ, I have working and show Goldens plus a couple of spaniels, in the past I have fed Skinners and can categorically say that imo CSJ is far better (for my lot at least), their coats gleam, the mess and smell is less, sweet breath, eat with gusto etc. Cerri at CSJ is brilliant also.
- By clio1 [gb] Date 18.08.08 06:32 UTC
Which one of the CSJ range are you using?,  I have tried the 'That'll do' and my dogs didn't seem to enjoy it much.  They did eat eat it though!
- By Dill [gb] Date 18.08.08 10:49 UTC
I swapped from Burns as I couldn't justify paying those prices and then having to add large amounts of meat - tripe or lamb, basically using Burns as dog biscuits :(   without the meat my dogs were skin and bone, no muscle and their coats were terrible :(   They had changed the Active formula and it no longer suited my dogs, neither did Lamb Extra or normal Burns.  It was suggested that I mix the normal with the Active   but I decided a change was in order.

I now use CSJ and the difference is amazing!  The dogs are well muscled, their coats are great and they have excellent energy levels.  The difference to my pocket is also amazing ;)

I currently feed That'll do!  but am waiting for a bag of Herbie Rings.  I want to see if they like the herbs and it'll feed the pup nicely after 6 months :-)
- By Floradora [gb] Date 18.08.08 10:56 UTC
I reared the pups onto cp27 and am feeding the adults on a mixture of cp24 and the older ones and csj champ. It is brilliant food
- By clio1 [gb] Date 18.08.08 13:29 UTC
Well,  if I could get Burns for £17.00 then I would feed that.  As I can't, I've ordered a couple of bags of CSJ Lamb and Rice, £18.00 per 15kg.  It actually contains 28% Lamb meat meal.  That's quite good............isn't it??
- By goldie [gb] Date 18.08.08 14:58 UTC
I dont want to sound stupid but what brand of food is csj ,it sounds like its quite good.i always feed AG but im happy to try another.

Hi,

We feed all our dogs on CSJ and reared our last litter on the Command Performance and were very pleased with the results.  We feed CSJ champ and our dogs are in wonderful condition with great coats.  We also use their herbs with great results.  We also like the personal touch that you get from Ceri, as you can ring and speak to her for help and advice.
