Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Orijen, any experience of feeding to pups?
- By PippaJ [in] Date 16.08.08 12:10 UTC
I have been doing some scary research and found that most of the common brands fed in this country are not recommended due to high cereal contents.
I have been reading about Orijen which gets good reviews BUT the dog food analysis website I am looking at says it may be too high in protenin for pups.
Anyone have any experience or thoughts please?
I have fed them all Eukanuba to date and they have all thrived but it is padded out with corn which isn't good for dogs.

Thousands of litters are successfully reared on foods that "Dog food analysis" site does not rate.  I think you need to bear in mind that the "Dog food analysis" site is not a consumer review body such as "Which" but is simply a showcase for the authors', whoever they might be, opinion.  They are simply individuals who have invested in a web site to express their views but their opinion is of no greater, or lesser if you like :-), value than yours or mine.
I have used Eukanuba for a litter before and been entirely satisfied with their progress.

These dog food analysis sites would do anything to be able to earn some money from doing advertising for a specific brand.  Don't get too involved in what they have to say.  All the common brands are used by top breeders and don't think that they have had any serious problems.

Thanks both, I don't think the website I was using is specifically promoting any brand, they have analyses for all common brands.
So in answer to my question about Orijen?

I have askd similar questions...with very little replies.
I have a puppy arriving in a few weeks and am thinking about feeding orijen as I feed one of my older dogs on it and she loves it and looks great.
Looking forward to more replies

I started feeding orijen to my pup when he was about 13/14 wks old until I had problems getting it. I then fed AG and have just started getting orijen fresh fish.

Louis has always been a bit picky and will miss meals completely. He also has a bit of a sensitive tum. I like orijen  because the higher protein content makes up for his missed or partially eaten meals. I sprinkle a handful into his ND or natures menu/harvest. He loves the small bite size too :) His poos are firm and not too smelly either. His coat is extremely glossy. HTH

This can probably be explained by the fact that Orijen hasnt been readily available in this country! it was sporadic on a few smaller sites and only in small bags at the end of 2006 it was really only in 2007 that zooplus gained wide spread acclaim for supplying Timberwolf, but then couldnt supply it leaving alot of folk stuck, that Orijen came into its own in this country as people swapped to it on zooplus and word got round.

So given the time frame its unsuprising you'll receive sparse feedback from litters raised ;)
My advice would be to ask your question on Canadian sites (www.pets.ca  has alot of threads on Orijen) If you just put Orijen and ca or us into google you'll get links to many forums discussing Orijen :) some you may have to join up, but will help you with your research hopefully?
