Hiya
Can anyone give me any info, ideally first hand about these dogs?  I am not asking for myself but for a friend who is an experienced dog owner and is looking to get one in the future but wants to do plenty of research first.
Anything about health tests, breed clubs, breed 'quirks' etc would be great.
Exercise wouldn't be a problemn as they used to own WSDs but appreciate that there is probably going to be a difference re obdience levels LOL!

Don't know but remember seeing two at a show once and their temperaments were terrible.  Don't know whether this is a breed trait or not?
- By BusyDoggs [gb] Date 13.08.08 12:17 UTC
I would contact Ann at Shepherdsway she is a breed expert - I know they are not a breed that I could live with!! and I have a BC and Malamutes already :)

Hi,CED are wonderful dogs, however they are headstrong and very energetic. Not a dog for a first time dog owner.Their traits are very similar to that of an Alaskan Malamute but can be more distructive and very easily bored. They are not too difficult to train as I am lead to believe and loyal. But must be well socialised from an early age. They are highly energetic and need plenty of exercise. They are one of the oldest dog breeds in the world  thought to originate about 1100A.D and originate from the Innuit tribes where they are called 'quimmiq'.They were used by the Innuits to haul  their Sledges over long journeys and to hunt seals. They can haul upto 99-176 lbs over 15-70 miles on snow or up to 33lbs back packing in the summer.
They are a strong and sturdy dog, with a medium bone structure.Weighing in at about 65-88 lbs. They are between 20-28 " high depending on a Bitch or a dog. They have a double coat Stiff guard hairs over a dense undercoat and tend to moult once a year.Mean hip scores I believe are 17,and eyes should be tested clear.
Check out the Kennel Club for the breed standard.
A canadian Eskimo Dog is 'a typical Spitz dog with a thick neck and broad chest, well boned legs and medium length.Majesticand powerful physique that is built for hard work not speed.
There are breed clubs in the USA and Canada but nothing specific in the U.K.However there are a few of people in the U.k who own CEDs,one in particular I keep annoying for advise!!!!!
I am just a novice with 4 mals in training!!!!But hope this helps.
A CED is on my wish list and I am working towards my goal!!!
- By Lori Date 13.08.08 12:39 UTC
HuskyGal is interested in CEDs. If she doesn't reply PM her. I know she was looking at adding one to her family.
- By georgepig [gb] Date 13.08.08 13:22 UTC
Thanks guys I'll pass all this on.
They are deffo not novice dog owners and have had pretty highly strung BCs before so can probably work round the destructive element.
I'm off to see what they should look like as I can't remember seeing a piccie of one and I didn't realise they were a KC recognised breed
- By georgepig [gb] Date 13.08.08 13:36 UTC
Another option they were considering if these were too much or too difficult to get hold of was the Eurasiar (?sp).
I understand these are totally different but again any advice would be great.
I get the impresison they are up for a challenge!
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 13.08.08 13:36 UTC
As you said they are a recognised Kennel Club breed, however they do not have C.C status. There are very few classes run for them at any show, usually having to enter N.S.C or rare breed.
Can't wait to have one and am on a waiting list.Yippee!!!
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 13.08.08 13:45 UTC
Again not many around, much smaller than CED but of spitz type. From what I heard they are very loyal, calm and good family members.
last year 76 Euraisers were registered (import) and 3 CEDs,though ceds have doubled this year.
- By georgepig [gb] Date 13.08.08 14:00 UTC
Wow so I guess you've been on a waiting list for a while now??
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 13.08.08 14:07 UTC
Not too long, few months and I keep nagging the breeder!!!!But have had it in mind for the last couple of years, just after we had our first Mal,but wanted to make sure I was 100% about owning a CED.Also wanted to go part time so I had more doggy time, and was helping to care for my O.H mum and Dad who have both sadly passed away now. Also my 2 daughters are growing away now and prefer to be with their Boyfriends than me!!So have plenty of time to fill.
- By Lori Date 13.08.08 15:37 UTC
Totally different kettle of fish. Eurasiers were bred to be pets - they have no other job in mind. You'll like this, HuskyGal has a Eurasier. :)
- By georgepig [gb] Date 13.08.08 16:15 UTC
Is that the red dog she has?  Soooo cute :)

I guess that they know they are different but maybe they don't.  I would think after the crazy WSDs they've had that they may be more inclined towards something to keep them busy most of the time.  It wil be a while before they look to get one, especially as they are few and far between, but then you can never be too prepared.

Off to go look Eurasiers now as that could be another to add to my ever growing list of 'one day' dogs lol.
- By Lori Date 13.08.08 16:32 UTC
Yep, that's her red girl. I think she gets up to some mischief. ;-) I spent some time in the Eurasier booth at Discover Dogs. :) My first dog was a Keeshond so they appealed to me. Lovely dogs.
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 14.08.08 10:21 UTC
My Mal is in love with a Keeshond - isn't he Carol.LOL.

Hi GP,

About 7yrs ago I lived in the States, my boyfriend at the time raced Huskies, when I was finally entrusted to start my baptism as a musher,it was a team of CEDs that I was given, so that goes to show something!
As working dogs I found them to be extremely instinctive (much more hard wired than Sibes/mals) they play hard, sleep hard and pull hard!! Pack dynamics constantly changed, and their Prey drive is MUCH more strong than other sled dogs Ive lived or worked with. I made the fatal novice mistake of tethering them too close to another team when feeding once...Never again! (carnage!! as I said their instincts are strong)
I found them to be MUCH more loyal to their owner than my 'love everyone' sibes ;) and having the luxury of working with many dogs meant I soon learnt that there are unifying breed traits but ALL the dogs were different (from laid back to livewire) In the main I found them easier to train and none of the 'oooh shall I shant I..ooh I'll just ignore your voice for a bit longer while I decide' that all Sibes Ive owned have displayed.
I found them, and was told, they are easy to train (and they thrive on work) they will clamour against boredom tho' vocally (oh boy!!) and physically.
It is said they are not a breed tolerant of children... this manifests itself more in their tenacity with food gaurding etc so that I guess is where the problems with having them small chuildren would come in. Although when I spent time with Paul Stucke (who provides dogs for many polar expitidions) they blended well into the family... but that was the oldies.

Funnily enough when I was researching the breed I also was lucky last year to visit an elderly lady in Finland (who was a Greenlander who had married a canadian and lived in Navakut) she had some amazing old pictures from 1880's and looking at those I commented on how closely the resembled my Eurasian (albeit for height)

The Eurasian, not a breed I would have chosen she chose me! But yes as they were bred for, a great companion dog.She strikes the right balance and is not too velcro! but will always be 'around' I was told the Eurasian cant be left alone and doesnt do well kenneled but she has been fine (not to say thats the norm..but... any seperation anxiety I have not seen, maybe she's unique? but Ive spoken to others who say the same)
Wary around strangers but not flat on the floor timid...its more an aloofness, she will come to you (a stranger) in her own time unlike my Sibe who will have trampled you in the blink of an eye for attention hugs and licks! but very quickly she will be wiggling around at your feet with a big grin.
Definately Happy dogs the Eurasier! and a little spark of impishness in there (which I like!) Not a vocal breed... but will bark (a deep low, sounds like a dog 3 times the size bark!) so not yappy! (I couldnt 'do' yappy!!) she will only bark if nescessary.
I was told they have low prey drive...hmmmm!! well my little 'un is a right hunter gatheress!! (very like the sibe in the respect...almost cat like in hunting) she'll go for feild mice and birds and prefers to catch and play with than kill and gobble up (like the CEDs)
Extremely easy to train and thrives on it (will make cracking agility dogs Im sure) a surprising turn of speed and can pull alot harder than you'd expect, while on the hunt she goes much more selectively deaf than my sibe (which I never thought possible!)
All in...... I'd have a CED tomorrow as a working dog and a Eurasier as a pet dog :) (but not tomorrow..Im  eyeing up those lovely Chayo Mals ;) ;) ) both CED and Eurasian loyal as the day is long.
HTH?
Liv.

I have followed this thread with interest as I love learning about new breeds. I've seen CED's at shows and thought they were lovely but thats about as far as it went...!

Just wanted to say how I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post HG - your summaries on the 2 breeds made such interesting reading. For me this is what the forum is all about, learning new stuff from those with experience. I think Eurasiers are stunning and your girl sounds great - CED's sound too much of a challenge for me so I will continue to admire from the sidelines...oh but I can vouch for those Chayo Mals as fab pets :-) :-)
- By kiger [gb] Date 14.08.08 23:11 UTC

Thanks ever so much for all your help guys.  I'll pass it all on.
Very interesting to learn about different breeds and the Eurasians sound lovely :-)
They are used to working dogs though and I guess the decision is up to them!  I'll be popping round all the time when they eventually get a pup ha ha!!
