Does anyone know what the current waiting time for results is?
thanks
- By koolcad Date 12.08.08 22:17 UTC
My friend has just had her results back, or I should say her dogs!  It was about 5 weeks, it just depends if your stuff gets to the Board as it's sitting or whether you have to wait for the next one.

Apparently (according to my Vet) there is a sitting next Wednesday

I think they have a sitting every 4 weeks (?) BUT I had my bitch hip scored in April and the sitting was cancelled and there was a back log (so my vet said) so I didn't get results until July. Thought i'd left enough time but ended up being a bit of a tight squeeze!

SWD owner got theirs back last week after 8 weeks, although they had been returned to the vet with a query and he'd sat on them and not sent them straight back!

Hi,
A bit off-topic, but can somebody please tell me if having the hips x-rayed is the same as hip-scoring? Thankyou.
- By koolcad Date 13.08.08 14:17 UTC
Not off topic at all.  In order for hip scoring to take place you have to have the hips x-rayed.  When the hips have been x-rayed, the plates are then sent off to the BVA for someone to have a look at ... this is where the scoring is applied, so there's the fee to the vet for the X-ray and then an additional fee sent direct to the BVA with the plates, think it's around £23.
My youngest girly is going to the vets for x-ray tomorrow ... hopefully the plates will get sent off in time to hit next Wednesday's sitting!!!

Currently 9 weeks from x-ray to result.

Thanks all..... won't sit around waiting then...lol

Thankyou for your reply koolkad. Does the scoring give you more info than the x-ray? And why can't a vet do the scoring?

Your GP vet can look at the x-rays and tell you whether the hips are good or bad, but it needs a group (to avoid subjectivity) of people specially trained to look at the detail to determine exactly how good or bad the joints are. A single vet isn't qualified to do it, just as a teacher isn't qualified to mark A-level papers or a driving instructor to tell you whether you've passed your driving test.

Because many GP vets are unable to "read"plates accurately. I know of many GSDs who were X rayed by their GP vets & their owners told the hips were too bad to be bred from, when these plates were submitted they were actually low scoring & under the breed mean, average & median

A vet who is experienced in submitting plates for X raying can give a better estimate & the one I use is rarely more than 1 point out & usually spot on

The plates need to be scored by an offical body so that records can be kept & also proof(on the puppies Reg certificates)that the parents have been scored, as well as being viewed & examined by trained assessors

I had one of my bitches hip scored this year and was really cross as the vets that I normally get to do  it failed to mention that they had a new digital machine and it took almost 3 months for them to get back to me to let me know that the BVA had sent back the xrays saying that they were too dark and they didn't like to score digital ones!
The said that I could get it done again if I wanted !!!
But would have to travel an hour down the road to their other surgery! (made me almost want to ask them for the petrol money as it had been their mess up in the first place)
so once again my poor bitch had to be pulled around an have another xray and this time it took 2 mths for them to send it back thankfully with a nice result ;-)

There was a sitting last friday and the week before. One of my dogs was done in the first sitting but the other missed out because of a paperwork error on behalf of the vet.
So they are sitting regulary and if you phone the BVA they will tell you which sitting your dogs plate are booked to.
Took 5 weeks for the results.

I'm a teacher AND I'm qualified to mark A-level papers!! :-0

Sorry, being silly now ... I know what you meant really!

Just had my girl x-rayed today, was told by one of the vet nurses she'd just received some results after an 8-week wait and the cost has now gone up to £35.60 ... think that's what I wrote the cheque for, now can't find book.

OK I spose what I'm asking is:
I'm having my dog's hips x-rayed tomorrow (at the RVC) - do I take the vet's diagnosis, or do I need to get a score? There's no breeding involved and she's not pedigree, so it's only to know if she has a problem they can do anything about. She's been wincing and limping, just very occasionally, but I want to know if there's anything treatable there.

Your vet will be able to tell you if her hips are really bad or really good. S/he won't be able to tell you exactly how bad or good when compared to the rest of her breed. If every dog of every breed was scored then we'd have a far more accurate picture of the true state of dogs' hips. If she's not of a recognised breed (or even a certain cross! ;-)) then a score would probably be an unnecessary expense.
